Quality of Life Initiative celebration happening Friday at Carson City's Silver Saddle Ranch
The community is invited to join the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department this Friday, Oct. 29, for a lovely autumn afternoon at Silver Saddle Ranch celebrating the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Question 18, the Quality of Life Initiative!
Q18 was passed in 1996 and led to an increase in the sales tax rate ¼ of 1% ($0.0025) to fund the acquisition, development and maintenance of parks, open space, trails, and recreational facilities.
Let's celebrate this accomplishment and the enumerable benefits that have resulted in this amazing community where we work, play and call home.
This is a free event and all are welcome! Festivities will run between 1 to 5 p.m. and include: live music, cowboy poetry, food from the Bus Boy, beverages from Great Basin Brewing, and speeches from our Carson City leadership about the importance of Quality of Life in our community.
There will also be tables from some of our non-profit partners including Muscle Powered, Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, the Boys and Girls Club, the Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation, and Tahoe Mountain Milers. Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch will also be doing wagon rides with their infamous mule team!
Parking will be located at Silver Saddle Ranch which can be found on Google Maps. Specifically, the property is located 1.5 miles South on Carson River Road from East 5th Street.
Meanwhile, November 2021 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Quality-of-Life Initiative, a voter approved sales tax dedicated to parks, trails, open space, and the Boys and Girls Club in Carson City. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to celebrate with a fun variety of free activities for all ages and abilities.
QOL generated more than $55 million in revenue since its inception and leveraged nearly $12 million in grants. It preserved thousands of acres of open space and constructed miles of public trails. QOL funded important projects such as the Robert “Bob” Crowell Multipurpose Athletic Center; renovated the Bob Boldrick Theater and the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range; and made improvements to Fuji, Mills, Centennial, and many other parks in Carson City. The capital city has more parks per capita than the national average, consisting of over 8,000-acres of parks, trails, and open space.
