Circle of Life Community Hospice in Northern Nevada has initiated "The Hospice House Project” an establishment that is the first of its kind here in Northern Nevada.

On February 9, 2023 at approximately 1524 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the area North of Singing Waters Road on US Highway 50 Alt in Fernley, Nevada for a reported larceny.

A Fernley citizen reported seeing a bobcat tractor that had been stolen from the Nevada Cement Quarry. The citizen confronted the suspect, who punched the reporting party multiple times, starting a physical altercation.

UPDATE: The suspect in Saturday's strong arm robbery is in custody.

The strong arm robbery happened just before 11 a.m. in the area of Mills Park near the community center. The suspect is alleged to have demanded money from a woman near the Carson City Community Center while holding a large rock.

The man was described as either Asian or Hispanic wearing black pants, a black sweatshirt and a grey beanie with visible face tattoos. He demanded money from her and then ran off on foot heading Northbound on Roop.

UPDATE Saturday: The Carson City School District issued the following statement regarding the incident:

The Carson City School District has learned that as a result of an investigation into an unrelated matter on Wednesday, Feb. 8, two individuals were arrested for allegedly possessing a firearm on school grounds on Monday, Feb. 6. The District is fully supportive of and cooperating with local law enforcement in their investigation. As ever, the District and the Sheriff’s Office keep the safety and well-being of students as the top priority. We want to assure our families and the community that we continue to be vigilant in our efforts to keep our students, staff and visitors safe.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested two allegedly gang-related students on Wednesday, Feb. 8 for possessing a gun on school grounds.

The students were arrested at their homes following a report from the school district to the sheriff’s office.

Late Friday night, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency to help mitigate the impact of the California fuel pipeline leak in Southern Nevada.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Thursday that with just over $1 billion in the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, unemployment benefit payment reserves are continuing to build toward recommended levels. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford found the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners to have been in violation of Nevada’s Open Meeting Laws (OML) during three meetings in 2021.

On Jan. 27 Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 hosted a fundraiser for Night Off The Streets, Inc. warming shelter. Ticket sales and all proceeds from the silent auction and raffle garnered $7,411 from this worthwhile event.

This was augmented by a Community Investment Program (CIP) grant from the State and National Elks Foundation of $1,548. A local Elk donated an additional $52 to round the grant up to an even $1,600 check as shown in the picture. Total raised was $9,011.

Western Nevada College has scheduled a Purple Heart ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. to honor United States veterans who have lost life or limb serving their country.

Gov. Joe Lombardo plans to propose lifting a cap on wages for state employees and creating new cabinet-level secretary positions within the governor’s office to coordinate with executive branch departments, the governor’s chief of staff Ben Kieckhefer told The Nevada Independent Tuesday.

Carson City’s Friends In Service Helping, also known as FISH, had a busy year providing meals, housing services, showers, laundry and more to the community in 2022.

FISH has been operating as a non-profit in Carson City since May 1979, with 90 percent of their funding coming through community support and donations.

Progress is being made to remove several thousand cubic yards of boulders and rock debris from the Jan. 10 landslide and rockfall on State Route 208 through Wilson Canyon in Lyon County.
