Carson City area weekend weather: Slight chance of snow showers Saturday; cold next week
Dry and seasonal conditions will persist through Friday before giving way to another round of cooler weather this weekend as a quick moving storm moves into the region, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm will produce valley rain and snow showers along with breezy winds into Saturday. After a short lived rebound in temperatures Monday, light snow showers and much colder temperatures are forecast for Valentine's Day with cold weather persisting much of next week.
The most current weather models show light snow showers are possible beginning Friday night in the Sierra (about 1 to 4 inches with a 20 percent probability for 6 inches in some locations), making it down into parts of western Nevada valleys by Saturday morning, NWS forecasters say.
Some models suggest narrow bands of rain and snow showers may extend into far western NV by early Saturday morning, with snow levels initially near 5,500 feet dropping to 4,500 to 5,000 feet. Forecasters say snow amounts will be light, up to 1 inch or so in higher elevation foothill locations including the Virginia City Highlands
There is a potential for showers going south of US-50 through Saturday afternoon, although accumulations during the day look to be sparse in these area. At the time of this writing there hasn't been any weather advisories issued. Check back for updates as this forecast could change.
Sunday and beyond
As the system leaves the region Saturday night into Sunday, temperatures will remain a few degrees below normal, with wind gusts of 50-60 mph along the Sierra for Sunday evening. Temperatures will rebound toward average for Monday. But that will be short-lived as temperatures would plummet with the weather turning cold, blustery, damp and gray Tuesday onward, with daytime highs only in the 30s for western Nevada valleys, and 20s for Sierra valleys into Wednesday.
