Artisan Show and Sale Features Local Artists
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 8:20amArt doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among the 30 artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 20th annual Artisan Show and Sale in Reno Nov. 7 and 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Sixteen pieces of original art will also be given away.
According to Judy Carlson, one of the show coordinators, the juried show features returning artists and new artists displaying a variety of techniques and media.
Nevada Day Steampunk Ball Friday welcomes Nevada birthday revelers

The first ever Nevada Day Steampunk Ball, a costume fundraiser for ages 18-plus, is at the Carson Nugget Ballroom Friday from 7 p.m to midnight.

Reno Philharmonic Orchestra offers free Family Concert highlighting young talent

This is especially true for youth involved with orchestral programs. The Reno Philharmonic Association’s Free Family Concert and Youth Orchestra Fall Showcase puts the organization’s music education program center stage Nov. 15 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. The concerts are part of the Reno Philharmonics’ education and outreach initiatives, providing music education, enrichment and exposure to thousands of Washoe County and greater Truckee Meadows school children.

Steampunk Ball to celebrate Sesquicentennial

The event’s theme combines the formality of old-time nostalgia with a light-hearted science fiction twist, and includes high-energy dance music by Nevada’s own Rock-N-Roll Rebels, a no-host bar (for those 21+), sweet treats, and costume contest with prizes. Don't stress if you're having trouble coming up with Steampunk costume: consider dressing Victorian, western, or in the costume of your choosing.

The library will host safe trick-or-treating on Thursday, Oct. 30. Trick-or-treaters should visit each service desk for a holiday goodie while supplies last.
Original Emancipation Proclamation on display Nevada Day weekend

Carson Creepy Film Festival this Saturday at BAC
Submitted by editor on Wed, 10/22/2014 - 3:27pmAspiring teams of budding Carson City area filmmakers are hard at work this week developing and putting the final touches entries for the Carson Creepy Film Festival, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center.
From comedy to horror, teams were given one week to make a film within the genres of Ghost, Halloween, Monster, Psychological Thriller, Sci Fi, Spiders/Insects, Vampire, Witches, Zombie. All may lean to comedy or horror.
Carson City International Film Festival to roll in February
Submitted by editor on Tue, 10/21/2014 - 6:48pmWestern Nevada College is looking for student and independent filmmakers to submit their work for possible viewing at the upcoming Carson City International Film Festival. The event is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 5-7, 2015.
To be considered for the competition, filmmakers must submit an original video of up to 90 minutes in length and in DVD format to WNC by Monday, Dec. 1, 2014.
Nevada Day Pow Wow 2014 begins Friday at the Carson Colony

Nevada Artists Association's 64th 'Nevada Day' Art Show begins Oct. 27
Submitted by editor on Tue, 10/21/2014 - 10:52amThe 64th Nevada Day Art Show hosted by the Nevada Artists Association, is its biggest show of the year. This judged show will open on Monday, Oct. 27 and run through Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.
This exhibition was opened to all Nevada and Northern California artists and thus brings out the best and most recent works of the regions best painters, sculptors and photographers.
Awards are given for each media, Water color, oil, acrylic, pastel, photography and other, Best of show and Spirit of Nevada.

This year's concert will commemorate Nevada's sesquicentennial Celebration. The concert is FREE and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy this concert.

Day of the Dead is a multicultural celebration of life through death. In this wholesome family holiday, participants learn to deal with death in a healthy way by celebrating the lives of dear ones that has passed away. The holiday has become very popular in recent years and is celebrated in schools, homes, community centers and museums in all 50 states.

Frémont's 1843-44 Return Route though Oregon Country and Alta California" by Gene Hattori, PhD., NSM Curator of Anthropology as this month's Frances Humphrey Lecture. Doors will open for exhibit viewing in the main building at 6:00 p.m. with the lecture 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Museum Members and those 17 and younger may attend for free; Non-Member Admission is $8.00 per adult.

These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. Highlights of statewide Nevada Day weekend events are forthcoming.
On Friday Oct. 17, come watch the Nevada 150 Pony Express Delivery, on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City at 3:30 p.m.
Nevadans urged to participate in Oct. 30 Sesquicentennial 'Home Means Nevada' sing-along

Brian Sandoval and the Nevada 150 Commission for NevadaSings, a statewide simultaneous sing-along of “Home Means Nevada.”
On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m., Nevadans will join together to demonstrate their state pride by singing a rendition of “Home Means Nevada” in an attempt to set a record for the most people in an American state to sing their state song at the same time.
Singer/Songwriter Canyon White returns to A to Zen
