Annie, Jr. finds a home with Youth Theater Carson City

Leapin' Lizards, it's Youth Theater Carson City! The popular comic strip heroine Little Orphan Annie takes center stage in ANNIE JR., an adaptation of one of the world's best-loved and most-performed musicals, Jan. 9, 10, and 11 at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center. Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Sunday.

Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book presented by Carson City Classic Cinema Club

The Carson City Classic Cinema Club's January film will be the 1942 Tecnicolor adaptation of the beloved Kipling classic, at Red's Old 395 Grill. All are welcome and encouraged to arrive early to enjoy Red's Happy Hour specials.
Trivia games and film discussion begin at 6:30pm, film at 7pm on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015. General admission $5; $3 for Seniors/Students; free for members.

Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded Warhol Foundation Grant

After learning earlier this month that it would receive a National Endowment of the Arts grant, the Capital City Arts Initiative has more good news that came before the end of 2014. It has received a $50,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The Foundation awarded the organization the grant for two years of program support through 2016.

January Browsers Corner event features writer's debut mystery novel

Come to the Browsers Corner Book Store in Carson City to meet author Mark S. Bacon at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8. Mr. Bacon has written for radio, TV, the web, magazines and for newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle.

He has written several business books, one of which was selected as best business book of the year by Library Journal, but “Death in Nostalgia City” is his first mystery novel.

Carson City woman and author of 'Bonners' Fairy' series picked up by publishing house

Scottsdale, Arizona-based book publisher Vigilante Publishing Group is publishing "Bonners’ Fairy," a novel by Carson City area resident Elizabeth Patterson.

The publishing house picked up the book series that had originally been self-published. Patterson, a Carson City Support Services Specialist, has penned a series of six children's fantasy and adventure books based around the mythical land known as Bonners' Fairy.

Sponsorships and Tickets available for Winter, Wine, Spirits and All That Jazz

The Brewery Arts Center's annual fundraiser, Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz, is kicking it up a notch this year with more than 25 distilleries and wineries, music, performances and more and is seeking community support through sponsorships. Tickets are available now for the Jan. 17, 2015 event for $40 in advance and $50 at the door. You can access tickets through the Brewery Arts website at www.breweryarts.org. Pre-purchase is recommended, as tickets are limited.

After-Christmas holiday events planned at Sand Harbor

Enjoy the holidays by taking a sleigh ride around Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe or renting snow shoes to get down to the beach. The park restaurant will be open weekends for holiday drinks and snacks. Special meal and sleigh ride packages will be available as well.

The final weekend to take a train ride with Santa at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has arrived. Today and Sunday the train will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Advance tickets are on sale to allow priority boarding on a scheduled day. The historic and picturesque V&T Railway steam locomotive No. 25 pulls Santa Train, departing Carson City’s Wabuska Depot at the corner of Fairview Drive and Carson Street.

Capital City Arts Initiative Courthouse Gallery in Carson City and St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City are among 10 "unmissable" Nevada spots for art lovers, according to the website TheCultureTrip.com.

In announcing its list the website notes Nevada is dotted with many places for art lovers to explore, including traditional galleries to more unique spaces. From Reno to Elko the state boasts a wide range of art from a host of talented individuals, including locals and international artists.

The Consort Canzona "Lessons and Carols" holiday concerts originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville) and Monday night (Dec. 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gardnerville) have to be canceled.

Too many of the performers are sick, including the conductor, Gary Schwartz. The group is affiliated with the Carson City Symphony, which WILL be having its 31st Annual "Holiday Treat" Concert as scheduled on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Families invited to 'Pines are Fine' presentation Saturday at the Nevada State Museum

In this Carson TV News segment, Deborah Stevenson of the Nevada State Museum discusses the “Pines are Fine,” holiday program from 10 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 in Carson City.

Visitors are invited to craft a pine cone wreath, a pine cone angel or decorate a small holiday tree made from a Jeffrey Pine cone and may work as long as they would like on the craft.

Celebrate the holidays with a sleigh ride along the majestic shores of Lake Tahoe at Sand Harbor State Park. The unique handcrafted sleighs, drawn by mighty Belgian draft horses, accommodate four to six people and can be equipped with wheels to operate when there is no snow. Warm blankets and hot chocolate are provided, and caroling is encouraged.

The park restaurant will be open weekends for holiday drinks and snacks, with special meal and sleigh-ride packages available.

Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grant

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.

CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.
