'The Mysterious Snow Plant' topic of monthly lecture at Nevada State Museum

Frémont’s team on their 1843-44 expedition crossing the Sierras, at the Nevada State Museum on Thursday, Nov. 20 presented by Pat King, PhD. as part of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series. Early arrival is recommended for "The Mysterious Snow Plant." The doors open at 6 p.m.; lecture to commence at 6:30 p.m. Museum admission is $8 for non-members and those over 17 years old.
Final Boarding Call for 2014 V&T Railroad Polar Express; Last chance for holiday train tickets

Because of the demand, more trips and passenger cars were added to the month-long event, which has consistently sold out since debuting four years ago and is expected to draw record numbers again this holiday season. Last year more than 16,000 passengers rode the train.
Indiana artist claims fifth victory in Nevada Duck Stamp Contest

But artist Jeffrey Klinefelter isn’t like most people. No matter how many wins Klinefelter gets, he never takes anything for granted.
“I’m very surprised,” he said. “There are a lot of talented artists out there and winning one of these contests is really hard to do.”

String Cheese Incident to jam Reno, Las Vegas in 2015 Winter Carnival Tour

String Cheese Incident will play the Grand Sierra Theater Jan. 23-24 as part of its 2015 Winter Carnival Tour.
St. Marys Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City to hold Saturday reception
Submitted by editor on Tue, 11/11/2014 - 3:51pmSt. Marys Arts and Retreat Center in Virginia City will host a reception for its art show “a winter tonic” on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reception will feature the work of Danish artist Nes Lerpa, Megan Berner, Jessica White and Dusty Roads artists.
Folk musicians Paula Frazer, Jacob Aranda, and David Cuetter will perform. In addition, the exhibit will include the best work from students in the Reno High School Advanced Art class. Kelsey Rolling, Emily Jiang, and Tyler Hart are students of Lauren Gandolfo.
Chris Proctor, Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, offers Workshop and Concert November 16

Proctor will be teaching a Steel String Guitar Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 16, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Fee is $40 and the only prerequisite is to know basic guitar chords and bring a steel string guitar.

The whimsical musical follows the adventures of a small-town doctor in Victorian England who uses his special gift of being able to talk with animals to learn more about the world. In this musical, Doctor Dolittle becomes the world’s greatest animal doctor by learning how to speak the thousands of different dialects of creatures.

Mile High Jazz Band Presents November Jazz Nov. 11 in Carson City
Submitted by editor on Sun, 11/02/2014 - 10:54pmMile High Jazz Band presents November Jazz, a program of big band music, on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.
In honor of veterans, the band will play "Bugle Call Rag," "American Patrol," and "In the Mood." To reflect the change of season, they will perform "The Heat's On," "Early Autumn," and, with band vocalist Cindee LeVal, "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening." LeVal will be featured in several selections.

Nevada Writers Hall of Fame to honor Shaun Griffin and Ronald James

This year’s ceremony will take place Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 in the Milt Glick Ballroom on the fourth floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union. Alicia Barber, author of Reno’s Big Gamble, will be awarded with the 2014 Silver Pen Award at the ceremony.
