Call to Freedom
The Reader’s Theater small group from the United Methodist Church will present “Call to Freedom” at the November 2 church services with selected readings prompted by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 as Commander-in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States.
When Lincoln first presented his Proclamation to a members of his Cabinet for their reaction, they were shocked! Lincoln himself later told the entire Cabinet that he had made a covenant with God, that if the Union drove the Confederacy out of Maryland, he would issue the Emancipation Proclamation. He had long expressed his “personal wish that all men everywhere could be free.”
An exhibit of an original copy of the “Emancipation Proclamation” is on display at the Nevada Museum of Art, Oct. 30-Nov. 2, Nevada Day Weekend celebrating Nevada’s 150th year as a state.
