Calling all Artists: NAA's Judged Nevada Day Exhibit Seeks Paintings and Photographs

The Nevada Artists Association invites local and regional artists and photographers to enter its 64th Annual "Nevada Day" Art Exhibit at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center NAA Gallery. This judged exhibition opens Monday October 27th and runs through December. The show is open to all Northern Nevada and California artist and photographers, NAA membership is not required.

Carson Chamber Singers to perform in Reno, Carson City this month

The Carson Chamber Singers, directed by Michael Langham, begin their 30th season with a pair of concerts in Reno and Carson City. The first concert, Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m., will be at Trinity
 Episcopal Church, 200 Island Ave. in Reno. The
 program will be repeated on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 300 S. Division St. in Carson City.

Run for your life! Redrun 2 comes to Virginia City Oct. 11

Virginia City will once again be overrun by zombies when Redrun II: A Zombie Sequel returns Oct. 11. Six miles through some of the Comstock Lode's most haunted history, six obstacle complete with zombies and insanity, and six safe zones/ revive stations along the revised course will make this annual race even more ghoulish.

The race begins at 1pm, however you must check-in at least one hour prior.
The after party AKA Zombie Manifestival will begin at 5pm.

Carson City Classic Cinema Club features 'Carnival of Souls' showing

Join us at Pizza Factory on Highway 50 East, in Carson City as we kick off the Halloween season with a screening of Carnival of Souls.
This 1962 independent thriller was inspired as the writer/producer/director stumbled upon the abandoned Saltair amusement park on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The film borders on campy, but has developed a strong cult following in recent years.

Rowans to dish musical feast of folk, roots and Americana Thursday at Adele's

The Rowans return to Cafe at Adele’s Oct. 2, to perform an acoustic set from 6 to 8 p.m. Depending on the weather, this will either be a continuation of the Summer Veranda Series, or will be moved into the lounge.
The last time brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan played here was August 2012.

Those who attend Thursday should be prepared for a musical feast that features everything from Americana and Folk to Roots Rock and beyond. With these two, the possibilities are endless.

RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

“We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

Recycled art contest materials available Oct. 3 at Bryan Building in Carson City

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is making materials available to participants in the statewide Recycled Art Contest. Recyclables, including plastic bottles, newspapers, aluminum cans and steel cans, may be picked-up in the lobby of the Bryan Building, 901 S. Stewart Street, Carson City, on Friday, Oct. 3. The store is open Tuesday-Saturdays 11am-5pm and features unique and vintage gifts, crafts, and a rabbit named Sweet Pea.

The Annual Street Vibrations event has begun and continues throughout Northern Nevada until Sunday, Sept. 28th. Carson City’s Harley Davidson Dealership at 2900 Research Way is holding their 14th Annual Bike Fest to celebrate on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 8:30am-9pm.

Live bands on two stages, Demonstrations by Liv Fast Moto Jumpers and Illconduct, a 5 acre beer garden, food court, and over 90 vendors are a part of the free party. The Carson City’s Sheriff’s Office will be there, as well, with an Advance Riding Show.

Fireworks will be at 8:30pm, Friday Sept. 26.

Filmmakers sought for first Carson Creepy Film Festival

Carson City area filmmakers who’ve ever wanted to take their art to the dark side are encouraged to enroll in the first Carson Creepy Film Festival, Oct. 15-20. The inaugural festival is open to teams who can turn around a film in a week’s worth of time. It’s free to enter.

With the general theme “Creepy” the Brewery Arts Center is looking for films from a number of sub genres to choose from including Halloween, Ghost, monster, psychological thriller, sci-fi, spiders and insects, vampire, witches and zombies. Films can lean to comedy or horror.

Silver State Stars to hold all-ages auditions Saturday for Midsummer Night's Dream

Auditions for The Silver State Stars production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream will be Saturday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Silver State Charter Schools.
Open to the public - looking for actors of all-ages. Those auditioning should prepare a one minute classical monologue.

Community rehearsals will be held Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon at the Performing Arts Center at Silver State Charter Schools. Performances December 11-14, 2014. Additional auditions for Silver State Charter Schools students will be held Thursday, September 25 at 12:30pm.

Historic radio series that chronicles Nevada folklife now online for Nevada 150 celebration

Nearly 30 years ago, the Nevada Arts Council and its partners created a radio series that would chronicle the fabric of Nevada folk heritage from experts in local arts that include bit and spur making, the language of gaming, neon glass blowing, cradleboarding and more. In celebration of the state’s 150th birthday, the full 13-episode series “Home Means Nevada 1986: Folklife in the Silver State” has been digitized.

Explore Your World: A Musical Pilgrimage Through Medieval Spain

Carson City Library recently announced the return of their popular program “Explore the World.”

Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 pm, the trio Calliope will perform European music from the 12th-16th centuries in an historical and geographical context. This group has performed in Reno, Carson City, Virginia City, and Lake Tahoe. Trio members Kathleen McGlone, Janet Wills, and Laura Barrett are instrumentalists in the early music ensemble, Consort Canzona.

This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Digitorium at the Carson City Library, located at 900 North Roop St.

Nevada Governor Sandoval announces annual poster and essay contest

As part of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration Gov. Brian Sandoval has announced the fourth annual statewide poster and essay contest for Nevada school children. This year’s theme will celebrate Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood with the state motto “All for Our Country.”

The contest, which is open to all Nevada school children, grades K through 12, in district, charter, private or home schools, includes four categories depending on grade level.

Carson City Symphony Chorus invites singers to perform in three upcoming concerts

The Carson City Symphony Chorus and conductor Michael Langham invite everyone who loves to sing, from high school age through adults, to join them. This season the Chorus will sing in at least three concerts with the Carson City Symphony: "A Nevada 150 Concert" on October 26, the "Holiday Treat" on December 14, and the "Pops Party" on June 14.

Nevada county association celebrates Sesquicentennial tonight with western singers, UNR cadet band

Tonight, Sept. 19, the Nevada Association of Counties will host a celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday with a performance by local western musicians Richard Elloyen and Steve Wade.

The event will also feature the UNR Cadet Band and a chance to see inside one of Carson City’s historic pre-statehood homes. The event begins at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the historic Ormsby Rosser house at 3rd and Minnesota Streets in Carson City.

Dayton artist unveils painting of living Nevada governors and elected officials

Renowned Dayton artist, Steven Saylor, has completed his painting “Nine Cheers for the Silver State,” featuring current governor Brian Sandoval, the two U.S. Senators from Nevada, and Mark Amodei, who represents the Northern Nevada congressional district.

The painting celebrates the 150th anniversary of Nevada statehood and will raise funds for the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and promotion of the Comstock Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Carson TV News: Carson Chamber Singers

In this Carson TV News segment, guest anchor Taylor Radtke discusses the 2014-15 season of the Carson Chamber Singers and Carson City Symphony Chorus.

They perform several concerts each year and have sung throughout the area. They sing regularly with the Carson City Symphony and have performed in several concerts with the Reno Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra.
