As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. And now with valley rain, wind and Sierra snow on the way, we tip our hat to one Carson Now reader, LaNair, who pledged he wouldn't turn on their heater these next few days because, well, it is May after all. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

Continuing Education at Western Nevada College is offering Introduction to Illuminated Text. If taken with the "Introduction to Calligraphy" class, the fee for both would only be $80.00 instead of the combined $100.

The class original fee is $50.

A brief history and overview of calligraphy followed by practice with samples of popular current styles. Class will also cover various tools and inks, as well as illumination. Students will complete a text of their choice, suitable for framing.

Oh what a difference the sunshine makes. The second day of May in Carson City will bring warming temperatures with a daytime high in the low 70s. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office joined forces with the Nevada Highway Patrol between April 12 and April 22 to educate the motoring public on distracted driving. The primary emphasis was to focus on drivers not using hands-free devices while driving.

MINDEN — With the onset of spring and warmer temperatures, Douglas County would like to remind residents of the potential for some minor spring flooding in the months to come. With the spring run-off, citizens could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane and Genoa Lane.

Going into the midweek, Wednesday, April 17, 2019, we're looking at a gradual warming trend, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 70. Events and activities are lined up for the day including art workshops, library presentations, live music and more.

These days, nearly everyone owns a cell phone, and they use them all day long. But among the many aspects of our job, we’re working hard to remind drivers that driving distracted by using the cell phone, riding with other vehicle passengers, eating and drinking, or even tuning the radio is a dangerous and, illegal habit.

Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. The Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team arrested two people Saturday on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges including drug possession and destroying evidence following a vehicle pursuit.

As matters at the legislature continue, we are winding up for another weekend full of activities, including the downtown wine walk and a bevy of shows at the Brewery Arts Center.
