— Friday Morning Walk to Mexican Ditch Trail-South hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly Friday one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the Hidden Meadows trailhead parking area at 965 Buzzy's Ranch Road. Dirt trail. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — Carson City Library Presents: Explore Earth Exhibit. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, will be on display at the Carson City Library. Getting people interested in science can be a challenge, but Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet strives to make it fun with a focus on local earth science topic, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes as well as a global look at our changing planet. 900 North Roop Street.

— Capital City Reads: Carson City Library April program features 'Station Eleven.' 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Happening through April. The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April. Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion. "Station Eleven" explores the role of arts and culture in creating and keeping the community connections that keep humanity alive after a devastating flu pandemic brings civilization as we know it to an end. This book was chosen to align with this year’s theme for National Library Week: Libraries = Strong Communities. Copies of Station Eleven in English and Spanish will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. — Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Join Carson City Library to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. — Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den in A to Zen Gift Shop held Friday. 6 to 9 p.m. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Open Mic Night happens every Friday from 6-9 pm. — Sierra Sweethearts host CD release party and concert at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. 7 p.m. The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975, is hosting the Sierra Sweethearts CD release party and concert this Friday in the BAC’s Black Box Theatre in Carson City. The public is invited to share and be part of the fun. The Sierra Sweethearts bring sparkling vocal harmonies, sizzling instrumentals, and rather frequent outburst of laughter and silliness, so these gals will always entertain! In addition to lively stage performances featuring songs from the Bluegrass, Cowboy, Classic Country, Doo Wop and 1940’s songbooks, the Sierra Sweethearts love to play for "old timey" dances. They bring twin fiddles and even their own dance caller! Winners of the 2017 “Forte Award for Best Bluegrass, Americana Band in Northern Nevada” the Sierra Sweethearts are Reno’s premier all-woman ensemble and are guaranteed to get everyone toe tapping! — Husband and wife Americana duo, Seth Brand, to perform at Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City. 8 p.m. Seth Brand is Asheville, North Carolina's No. 1 Americana Rock/Pop songwriter and has been performing his original, heartfelt and inspiring tunes at various establishments throughout the country as well as several radio shows. With wife Sara at his side playing percussion, the Brands are currently touring the States for their Desert Mountain Tour. Since getting married last April, they have been chased by a mountain lion, had severe food poisoning, flat tires, multiple car accidents, moved across the country, gave each other matching tattoos ... and now tour the U.S. living together in a van. — The Carson Comedy Club Presents Comedian Jeff Capri. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Described as "Energetically laid back," Jeff Capri is one of few second-generation comics working today. Jeff covers everything from pop-culture, biographical and political twists as well as a silly pun or three. A world traveled comedian, Jeff has worked a variety of audiences. Comedy clubs, cruise lines, military tours, and corporate events. Considered a consummate professional; his strong improvisational ability enables him to adapt to any crowd. Jeff’s television appearances, (Comics Unleashed, Last Comic Standing, Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star and new reality show, “Who wants to Date a Comedian?”) have enabled him to work alongside many respected entertainers, including Ellen DeGeneres, Rodney Dangerfield, Joy Behar, and Roseanne. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. Come on in and enjoy browsing the new art in the "Spring has Sprung" show running now through May 3 at the Nevada Artists Association Carson City gallery located in the Brewery Arts Center. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. Potential watercolor approaches include: wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, watercolor pouring, wet-to-dry, layering, pulling-the-bead, alla prima painting, plein air and more. Potential fundamental topics include: color temperature, color value, compositional design, color harmony, drawing principles, avoiding common pitfalls, artwork presentation, painting from life, and more. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
