Want to learn how to make beautiful GemTangles with just your basic Zentangle kit and some colored pencils? It's easy, and as always...no mistakes! You'll learn a couple of techniques to add sparkling, glassy gems to your zentangles. This is both fun, relaxing and addictive! Oh, and you'll learn a few new tangles, too! Class size is limited.
Prerequisites: "Zentangle 101," "Advanced Zentangle," Introduction to Renaissance Tiles OR Grow Your Own Tangle Garden.

Join Washoe Lake State Park staff for an astronomy-themed program under the stars. Ancient cultures studied the stars for various reasons. Today, relaxing under the stars means taking a break from our fast-paced modern culture. We will point out some common summer constellations and discuss events like the ongoing Perseids Meteor Shower and the upcoming total solar eclipse (which we will not be able to see from the park).

Sierra Music Society continues its fine Artists In Concert programs with “Just One Night” on Tuesday, August 1st at 7 pm. The concert will be at St. John’s Presbyterian Church located at 1070 West Plumb Lane in Reno, NV. “Just One Night” will feature the lovely soprano Jamie Wenner and tenor Neal Long accompanied by Andrea Lenz. The concert lasts about an hour and is a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful music in a beautiful setting. Admission is $15. If you are looking for a way to introduce children or a novice to the world of classical music, this is it!

Celebrated as one of the best July 4th fireworks shows in the nation attracting an estimated 100,000 people, “Lights on the Lake” pyrotechnic display at south shore Lake Tahoe is synchronized to music from patriotic favorites to new chart-topping rock and pop hits.

If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

Nevada residents and visitors are invited to “Discover Nevada State Parks” on Saturday, June 10. Park visitors will receive free day use admission and free fishing — no license required — at all of Nevada’s 23 State Parks.

Sierra Music Society continues its fine Artists In Concert programs with “To Opera, with Love” on Saturday, May 20th at 5 pm. The concert will be at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church located at 3680 US Highway 395 South in Carson City, NV.

“To Opera, with Love” will feature the lovely soprano Irina Kasimova and baritone/tenor Chris Nelson accompanied by Bryan Chuan. The concert lasts about an hour and is a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful music in a beautiful setting. Admission is $15 General; $12 Seniors/Students/Military; and $10 Twelve and under.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

Give mom the gift of quality time this Mother’s Day weekend aboard special train rides on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The pre-season round-trip train rides celebrate mom along the relaxing 16-mile journey from Carson City to the Comstock-era town of Virginia City, May 13-14.

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

SATURDAY:

Irish eyes are smiling on us: it’s going to be a gorgeous day. You won’t have to look far for some green beer, whiskey, or corned beef – there will be St. Patrick’s Day parties all over. Live music is on the menu, as well. Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

The snow has finally stopped falling and now it’s time to go play in it. What’s on your weekend fun list: snowmen and skiing or a toasty fire with a good book? Students finding their future careers before they have even graduated from high school has been an evolution in the making and who would have thought?

However, between Carson High School’s Senior Project graduation requirement, made possible by the generous working community of Carson City, the myriad of old and newly formed clubs offered to the students of Carson High, and on-site income earners like The Greenhouse Project, not to mention the Career and Technical Education Jump Start program offered through Western Nevada College, students are figuring out quickly that high school is not the end of their education before starting a career, it is where they may actually begin their careers.

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. The Carson City couple learned to throw clay four years ago through a local studio, and now are ready to pass on what they've learned by opening their own pottery studio inside the Carson Mall.

After a months-long remodel that began earlier this spring, the Hacienda Market and Grill opened its doors to customers on Aug. 25, owner Elsa Kinzie said.

This weekend, I attended the final Levitt AMP concert for the summer at the Brewery Arts Center. Boy, was it fun! But, it also sparked a few connections for me which will result in business meetings this week. This, to me, is networking.
