Zen, Gems and Tangles...Oh Boy!

Want to learn how to make beautiful GemTangles with just your basic Zentangle kit and some colored pencils? It's easy, and as always...no mistakes! You'll learn a couple of techniques to add sparkling, glassy gems to your zentangles. This is both fun, relaxing and addictive! Oh, and you'll learn a few new tangles, too! Class size is limited.
Prerequisites: "Zentangle 101," "Advanced Zentangle," Introduction to Renaissance Tiles OR Grow Your Own Tangle Garden.

Stargazing program this Saturday at Washoe Lake State Park

Join Washoe Lake State Park staff for an astronomy-themed program under the stars. Ancient cultures studied the stars for various reasons. Today, relaxing under the stars means taking a break from our fast-paced modern culture. We will point out some common summer constellations and discuss events like the ongoing Perseids Meteor Shower and the upcoming total solar eclipse (which we will not be able to see from the park).

The concert will be at St. John’s Presbyterian Church located at 1070 West Plumb Lane in Reno, NV. “Just One Night” will feature the lovely soprano Jamie Wenner and tenor Neal Long accompanied by Andrea Lenz. The concert lasts about an hour and is a relaxing way to enjoy beautiful music in a beautiful setting. Admission is $15. If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. It’s wine walk weekend, so downtown will be hopping with sippers, strollers, and plenty of summer fun. Keep reading, and you’re sure to find something to make this weekend special.

Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

Students finding their future careers before they have even graduated from high school has been an evolution in the making and who would have thought?

However, between Carson High School’s Senior Project graduation requirement, made possible by the generous working community of Carson City, the myriad of old and newly formed clubs offered to the students of Carson High, and on-site income earners like The Greenhouse Project, not to mention the Career and Technical Education Jump Start program offered through Western Nevada College, students are figuring out quickly that high school is not the end of their education before starting a career, it is where they may actually begin their careers.

Business Spotlight: New pottery store in Carson City to teach love of clay

Then there's Merrill and Jo Moore, who do both.

The Carson City couple learned to throw clay four years ago through a local studio, and now are ready to pass on what they've learned by opening their own pottery studio inside the Carson Mall.

After a months-long remodel that began earlier this spring, the Hacienda Market and Grill opened its doors to customers on Aug. 25, owner Elsa Kinzie said.
