Weather to warm this week to near record highs

After falling to 15 degrees below the average daytime high temperature over the Labor Day weekend, temperatures will quickly rebound to around 10 degrees above average, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.

Sunday, Sept. 6: Things to do around the Carson City region

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

  • IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk: free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. (7am-10am; Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course; Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line)
  • First Sunday Breakfast at the Elks Club: 515 N Nevada (bar opens 7am; 8:30am-11am, $7)

Lake Tahoe resort debuts new climbing wall, children's zip line for Labor Day weekend

In time for Labor Day weekend, Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe's south shore unveiled a new permanent climbing wall Thursday and is set open to a new children’s ropes course and zip line Saturday.

  • Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

Carson Nugget Casino Hosts Live Entertainment in Outdoor Venue Beginning Saturday

The Carson Nugget in Carson City is kicking off a series of free outdoor concerts at the historic Laxalt Plaza adjacent to the Carson Nugget Casino beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, Labor Day Weekend. The first band in the series will be Mo’z Motley Blues Band who entertained during Taste of Downtown. They have a strong local following due to their versatility and infectious stage performance.

Douglas, Lyon authorities join forces for stepped up Labor Day weekend DUI patrol

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in Impaired Driving mobilization period. This enforcement detail is partially paid for by a grant from the State of Nevada, Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

Carson City area weather for Labor Day weekend calls for breezy, cool conditions

While fall doesn’t officially start until Sept. 23, weather around Carson City and the Sierra will take a noticeable turn to the cool side over the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A cold front will move through the Sierra and western Nevada Friday bringing strong winds and much cooler temperatures for the weekend.

Hard Rock Lake Tahoe to add outdoor concerts this summer

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Lake Tahoe announced this week they will be hosting six to eight outdoor concerts this summer. The rear parking lot at the Stateline property will be converted into an outdoor amphitheater that will seat up to 7,500 people.

In a venture with PR Entertainment, Inc., owned by former Caesars Entertainment Director Paul Reder, Hard Rock is looking to attract top-name national artists to the Lake Tahoe area. They plan on starting the concerts in June and concluding on Labor Day weekend.

What Works: Showing appreciation in the present moment

On Labor Day, I realized I was out of two baking staples — milk and eggs. Off to Grocery Outlet I went, with sweet potato fries in the oven, 25 minutes on the oven timer and less than one hour until I had to leave for the first potluck of two I was scheduled to attend. To say I was “on the clock” would be quite literal.
