Labor Day

Hello fellow anglers, fall is near and the fishing has picked up around our local area. With the change of the season comes the traditional opening of Heenan Lake, from the first Friday in September through the last full weekend of October.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Sept. 9, 2015 and beyond. Note: Nevada Department of Wildlife fishing reports for Western Nevada waters are not included as their most current reports have not been updated.

After falling to 15 degrees below the average daytime high temperature over the Labor Day weekend, temperatures will quickly rebound to around 10 degrees above average, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.

MONDAY: LABOR DAY

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.
SUNDAY:

• IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk: free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. (7am-10am; Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course; Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line)
• First Sunday Breakfast at the Elks Club: 515 N Nevada (bar opens 7am; 8:30am-11am, $7)
• Revolution Dog Sports Rat-tacular Barn Hunt and BattleBorn Bonanza Jack Russell Trials at Fuji Park

In time for Labor Day weekend, Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe's south shore unveiled a new permanent climbing wall Thursday and is set open to a new children’s ropes course and zip line Saturday.

Labor Day weekend always seems bittersweet. Sure, it’s a three day weekend and a great time to bar-be-que, camp, or enjoy friends and family. It also marks the end of the summer. Everyone has gone back to school, and the autumn crisp is beginning to sneak in. No matter where you roam this weekend: north, south, east, or west there is fun to be had. Or stick around town and enjoy the many things that make Carson City unique.

Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:

• Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
• Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

The Carson Nugget in Carson City is kicking off a series of free outdoor concerts at the historic Laxalt Plaza adjacent to the Carson Nugget Casino beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, Labor Day Weekend. The first band in the series will be Mo’z Motley Blues Band who entertained during Taste of Downtown. They have a strong local following due to their versatility and infectious stage performance.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in Impaired Driving mobilization period. This enforcement detail is partially paid for by a grant from the State of Nevada, Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

If you're looking for plans this Labor Day weekend, why not take a leisurely sightseeing tour of our own western Nevada and Sierra backyard? It’s easy to do, you’ll be on paved highways all the way, and you’ll have plenty of chances for taking photographs, shopping, buying souvenirs, eating and perhaps even a little fishing.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park in Silver Springs is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of September. Programs highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

While fall doesn’t officially start until Sept. 23, weather around Carson City and the Sierra will take a noticeable turn to the cool side over the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A cold front will move through the Sierra and western Nevada Friday bringing strong winds and much cooler temperatures for the weekend.

It's time once again to sip, shop and stroll through beautiful downtown Genoa during our September 6 event. The drink is Vodka, the non-profit recipient is "Suicide Prevention Network" and Nigel St. Hubbins will provide the entertainment once again. What better way to spend part of your Labor Day Weekend than with us in Genoa?

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Sept. 2, 2015 through Labor Day. This Saturday the California Department of Fish and Game is hosting the second of two annual free fishing days.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be participating in Joining Forces through the month of September. The focus will be impaired drivers and riders.

Help us Keep Tahoe Blue and take care of the beaches after the popular holiday weekend. We provide cleanup materials, refreshments, and raffle prizes. Bring your reusable water bottle and friends. The event will be Monday, Sept. 7 8:30 a.m. to noon at Nevada Beach on the South Shore.

The Interfaith Community of Carson City announces their seventh annual interfaith potluck picnic and food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. All members from the community are invited to attend this Labor Day.

This is a reminder that the big Labor Day Weekend, Friday Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 7, is around the corner and for many folks in this general area, it will be their last big outdoor adventure of 2015.

Join us for the 5th annual Comstock Community Rummage Sale on Labor Day weekend in Silver City. The rummage sale is on Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th from 9AM to 5PM at the Silver City Town Park, just 4 miles south of Virginia City off SR 342. Good Deals for a great cause. All proceeds benefit the Preservation of the Comstock Historic District.

The early bird catches the worm and in this case, the early bird gets special pricing for tickets to Lake Tahoe’s only farm-to-fork festival Sample the Sierra.

Early bird tickets for Sample the Sierra are available until August 1 and allow you to attend the festival for just $30 to fully experience dozens of restaurants, wineries, distilleries and breweries. Tickets will be priced at $40 per person from August 1 until the festival on September 6.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of July 13-19, 2015. Clear Creek Avenue will continue to be closed to through traffic Monday through Thursday between Lynette Lane and Center Drive due to utility work.

The Fourth of July is one of America’s favorite holidays. And why not? Families and friends gather to celebrate our country with food, parades, parties, picnics and fireworks.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Lake Tahoe announced this week they will be hosting six to eight outdoor concerts this summer. The rear parking lot at the Stateline property will be converted into an outdoor amphitheater that will seat up to 7,500 people.

In a venture with PR Entertainment, Inc., owned by former Caesars Entertainment Director Paul Reder, Hard Rock is looking to attract top-name national artists to the Lake Tahoe area. They plan on starting the concerts in June and concluding on Labor Day weekend.

On Labor Day, I realized I was out of two baking staples — milk and eggs. Off to Grocery Outlet I went, with sweet potato fries in the oven, 25 minutes on the oven timer and less than one hour until I had to leave for the first potluck of two I was scheduled to attend. To say I was “on the clock” would be quite literal.
