Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:

  • Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
  • Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.
  • Every first Saturday you can enjoy the Downtown Business Association's monthly Wine Walk. Sign up at Bella Fiore Wines, the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jacks, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Remedy's Bar, or Touched By Angels for only $15. This month enjoy Artisan Alley- authors, photographers, crafters and more next to the Nevada Day Store on W. Telegraph St. Or a book signing with Cindy Southerland, author and Carson City's cemetery historian at Morley's Books. You’ll find vintage folk music by Hallie Kirk at Comma Coffee and live music with Russell Ketenjian at Bella Fiore Wine.
  • Sunday join the free, informal, untimed IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk. The run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course. Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line.
  • Free admission to the outdoor pools for all veterans and active military at the Carson Hot Springs all day Sunday.
  • You’re invited to the seventh annual Interfaith Potluck Picnic and FISH food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at corner of Division and Telegraph. It runs 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday. Please bring a main dish, salad, side dish, or dessert to share in the potluck. And also bring your own set of plates, eating utensils, and lawn chair.
  • Live music with the Yawpers and the one and only Roo at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint starts at 9 p.m. Sunday night.

Virginia City:

  • Take advantage of Flashback Friday Museum Days in Virginia City. All Virginia City museums have waived admission, but donations are encouraged when you pick up the map at the Virginia City Visitors Center.
  • All weekend long, you’ll find something to enjoy during the Great Civil War Days in Virginia City. The Civil War Camp at Miner’s Park is open to the public and features a swap meet Saturday evening and a prayer service Sunday morning. Witness one of the five train battles that leave from the V&T Station or head to the Delta Saloon for a Victorian High Tea. www.ccwr.us
  • On Saturday and Sunday you won’t want to miss the fifth annual Comstock Community Rummage Sale at the Silver City Town Park, Silver City. It’s a benefit for the Preservation of the Comstock Historic District.
  • St. Mary’s Art Center is glad to welcome artist Brian Schorn. Saturday and Sunday he will be available for discussion about his newest exhibit, ‘Comstock Wabi-Sabi’ from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Join the Kiwanis at Pipers Opera House. A Tribute to Johnny and June, Trains, America and some friends – A Musical Journey Back in Time: The Man, The Music, The Memories can be seen Saturday at 4 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.
  • The annual Labor Day Parade begins at noon on Monday. Stick around and you’ll witness the ‘Battle of C Street’ by the civil war reenactors as part of the Great Civil War Days.

Reno/Sparks:

  • I hope you’re hungry. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off will be in Victorian Square in Sparks through Monday. Vendors, music, and all the bar-be-que you can eat await.

Lake Tahoe:

  • Heavenly Village will be the place to find classic cars, trucks and motorcycles beginning Friday through the holiday weekend. Events also include poker runs, demonstrations, sidewalk sales from merchants, food and live music.
  • On Friday, the 6th annual Sample the Sierra features a four-course gourmet Pop-Up Dinner at Lake Tahoe Golf Course prepared by the Whitney and Josh Deri of Blend Catering from Reno. They will create a special menu of garden-fresh ingredients from regional farms with each course paired with a local wine or spirit. Tickets are $75 and available online at www.samplethesierra.com.
  • Saturday through Monday, skiers and riders will save big on gear and equipment for next season, as Heavenly Mountain Resort hosts the 29th Annual Heavenly Sports Tent Sale at the California Main Lodge.
  • The Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race, a lake tradition for 23 years, is set for Saturday. The “battle of the paddle” pits Nevada’s M.S. Dixie II against California’s Tahoe Queen in a four-mile contest to determine overall bragging rights and the chance to win the coveted Tahoe Cup. Guests are welcome to jump on board at Zephyr Cove at 10 a.m. The race begins at 10:30 a.m. www.laketahoecruises.com
  • Lake Tahoe's only farm-to-fork festival culinary adventure is infused with live music, entertainment and vendors, Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe. Full tasting tickets are $40 and let you sample regional restaurants, mom and pop establishments, food producers, wineries, distilleries and breweries. Enjoy a marketplace, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations and more.
  • Saturday night the Reno Jazz Orchestra and Bobby Caldwell present ‘Perfectly Frank: A Salute to Frank Sinatra’ at Sand Harbor State Park, Lake Tahoe. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday night rocks with Sammy Hagar at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena and Skid Row at Vinyl inside Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
  • Heavenly Resort Mountain Run is a 5.8 mile trek that begins at California Base Lodge, climbs to the top of Lake Tahoe’s largest ski resort, and finishes at the Tamarack Lodge at 9,150-feet on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Runners can take the scenic ride down the Heavenly Gondola back to the base or descend on their own. www.skiheavenly.com
  • The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority presents the annual Labor Day Lake Tahoe Fireworks Extravaganza (http://tahoesouth.com/), Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Musical accompaniment will be on local radio: 93.9 FM-KRLT and 1490 AM KOWL. Lights on the Lake” is designed, choreographed, and performed by the world-renowned Fireworks by Grucci, and will feature a variety of patterns, shapes and designs fired from two barges. 
    “We are honored to be part of such a powerful tradition in South Lake Tahoe,” said Phil Grucci, President and Creative Director of Fireworks by Grucci. “Our performance above this iconic lake allows spectators to reflect on the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
  • What would Labor Day be without a little labor? Join the Keep Tahoe Blue Labor Day Beach Cleanup at Nevada Beach in South Shore Lake Tahoe. Douglas County:

  • Live music with Los Pistoleros, Hexashooter, and DJ Diabetto to celebrate Bartender Lindsay’s birthday is Friday night at the Genoa Bar in Genoa starting at 8 p.m.
  • The Art Fair at the Barn: live music, art show and sale, and more is at Trimmer’s Outpost on Main St. in Genoa Saturday 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • Sweet Sippin Sunday is a great event in Genoa. $12 gets you a commemorative glass to take around and sample various cocktails with. Every month the town chooses a different charity: September raises funds for the Suicide Prevention Network is the non-profit and features music by Nigel St. Hubbins. The sipping runs from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division has continued its investigation into the attempted kidnapping which occurred on February 8, 2024. As a result of the investigation, detectives developed probable cause to arrest Richard Henley.
