Outdoors with Don Q: Free Fishing Day in California on Saturday

CARSON CITY, Nev. — As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Trout fishing season opener at Alpine County's Heenan Lake

This is my annual reminder that a special window set aside for fishing begins on the Friday before Labor Day.
Sept. 2, 2011 is the Opening Day of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing season at Heenan Lake in nearby Alpine County, Calif.
Each year, that season opens the Friday before Labor Day and closes the last Sunday in October (October 30 this year).
If you’re interested and if you would like to enjoy a totally different fishing experience, plan to spend Sept. 02 at that easy-to-get-to location.

California has two Free Fishing Days associated with holidays this year. The first Free Fishing Day in 2011 is on July 2 (for the Fourth of July) and the second is on September 3 (for Labor Day).

Final reminder of Nevada’s 2011 Free Fishing Day

CARSON CITY — This is a final reminder that Saturday, June 11 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2011.
On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and you will not need to have a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp. However, you will need to abide by whatever the rules and regulations are for whatever water(s) you will fish on that special day.

If you would like to fish on June 11, be advised that the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will have planted many thousands of rainbow trout in our Western Nevada waters.

North coast salmon season opener shows promise

Department of Fish and Game biologists are expecting a promising north coast salmon fishing season through Labor Day, Sept. 5.

The sport season opened Saturday in the Klamath Management Zone, which stretches from the Oregon border to Horse Mountain, located just north of Shelter Cove.

The return of a healthy sport fishing season is excellent news for anglers and businesses in the region.

It seems like it was forever ago that construction finished on the Fuji Park fishing pond. Ever since then it’s just been sitting unused, but for good reason. They wanted to give all the plants they installed on the banks of this body of water time to take root and grow, so that they wouldn’t be trampled by dozens of feet while they were still establishing themselves.

Rory Reid’s Labor Day Weekend Stop in Dayton

Democrat Rory Reid's campaign for governor made a stop in Dayton on Saturday at the home of Shirley Lafreniere, a member of the Lyon County Democratic Party.

About 30 of Reid’s supporters attended the event. One of those supporters was Charles Lawson. Charles Lawson is running for Lyon County Commissioner. Reid addressed issues on energy, economic development and education.

Reid is a lawyer, business executive and the chairman of the Clark County Commission. He has managed Clark County’s $6 billion budget for seven years without raising taxes.

Nevada Business Leaders Say Legislation Pending In Congress Will Kill Jobs

RENO – Several Nevada business leaders took the opportunity of the upcoming Labor Day holiday to speak out today against federal legislation they say will kill jobs in Nevada at a time when the unemployed total more than 20 percent.

V&T Railroad extends Carson City to Virginia City operations through Dec. 18

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will extend its 2010 season to include new “Colors in the Canyon” train rides and will continue Saturday rides through Dec. 18.

The “Sisters in History Route” between Carson City and Virginia City was set to operate through Oct. 31, Nevada Day but due to popular demand as evidenced by many sold-out weekends, the season has been expanded for an additional six weeks, officials announced today.

NHP: Increased patrols, DUI checkpoints on tap through Labor Day

As the three-day Labor Day holiday weekend and the unofficial end of the summer season nears, law enforcement agencies plan to beef up their visibility, including a number of DUI checkpoints that will begin this weekend, the Nevada Highway Patrol announced today.

At least two roadblocks will be staffed by deputies, officers and troopers as part of the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety’s joining forces grant. One roadblock will be in Lyon County on Saturday and the other in Washoe County over the weekend, NHP reported in a press statement.
