Capitol Cab makes annual toy delivery to Ron Wood Center in Carson City
Less than a week to go until Christmas, Capitol Cab in Carson City finished collecting toys for its annual Toys For Tots campaign, which began on Black Friday this year and ended this morning, said campaign organizer and taxicab driver Mark Shepler.
The fruits of the company's labor, Shepler said, has yielded a 50 percent increase in donations from 2015.
"We've collected about $2,600 in toys this year," he said. Combined with monetary donations from customers and tips from cab drivers, Shepler estimated the grand total of donations is over $3,000.
"This is so cool that we can do this," Shepler said. "I wish we could get more cab companies to join in."
Two cabs stuffed full of toys left company headquarters along Highway 50 East shortly before 9 a.m. Monday morning, arriving at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center just about the top of the hour to unload the toys, which will be distributed by the center.
A portion of the Ron Wood Center's administrative office space was reserved for toy collections, and the toys delivered by Capitol Cab effectively filled the space already occupied by several bags full of toys that were collected over the weekend from "Cookies With Santa" at the Cafe at Adele's.
"Capitol Cab has been a wonderful partner for years," said Rood Wood Executive Director Joyce Buckingham. "They go above and beyond the call of duty and they're always among the first ones out there to help us out."
Buckingham said the donations from Capitol Cab are indicative of the community's giving spirit, especially during the Christmas season.
She said Carson City is home to several community partners, including Capitol Cab and the Cafe at Adele's, who step up to ensure area children in need can have a Christmas.
"We're very appreciative that they will make a lot of children happy," she said. "We have a very giving community. They always come through and help us out with those kids who may not have a Christmas. Thank you so much to all of the community for the outpouring of support and love for all of the childre of the area."
Buckingham said her organization will serve about 2,000 needy children this season, down from the 3,000 served in 2015.
She said there has been less need this year, a positive indicator for the area. But there is always a need, Buckingham said, and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center stands ready to help.
Toys For Tots toy drive campaign culminates Tuesday morning inside the Nevada State Capitol, where the Ron Wood Center will receive state donations spearheaded once again by the Capitol Police. A ceremony is scheduled at 9 a.m. at the portico inside the Capitol.
