Consort Canzona's 'A 17th Century Christmas' program this Sunday
Consort Canzona, a select group of local instrumentalists and singers, will present a seasonal program of Baroque works this Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 7:00 pm in Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 South (next to Best Buy) in Carson City.
The Consort was organized several years ago by local music teacher and ancient music aficionado, Sharon Kientz, for the study and performance of music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The original Consort consisted of recorders, harpsichord and cello. It was expanded in 2011 to include singers, and the larger group will perform this weekend.
During the early preparation for this program, Ms. Kientz fell ill and was unable to continue her leadership. Others have stepped forward to conduct rehearsals and provide direction.
The program consists of a cappella vocal works, instrumental pieces, and several works that include all performers. Composers represented include Michael Praetorius, Heinrich Schutz, and Jan Sweelinck, and the program features a delightful cantata for voices and instruments, “Rejoice, Beloved Christians,” by Dietrich Buxtehude.
A free-will offering will be accepted. For more information call Jane Johnson at 775-267-3427.
