Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Nov. 6

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Nov. 6-12.

ADOBE POND, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy's Guide Service (530-283-4103) (www.bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
Lake Almanor Fishing Report November 4, 2013
The fall bite continues to be solid at Lake Almanor with chilly mornings followed up by beautiful warm sunny afternoons.
The shallow bite is where it is at right now with all of our fish coming in the top 6 feet of water over both the shallows and the deeper parts of the east and west shore. These fish are on the move cruising looking for their next meal of pond smelt.
The fish are somewhat scattered so covering water has been the key.
Our fish our hitting a variety of color pattern spoons from dark greens and blacks to bright silvers and gold. Gear in and go.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing is closed for the season.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parchers Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
Parchers Resort is closed for the season.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

BRIDEGPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Flows have dropped to 25 CFS. This is a winter release.
We are choosing not to guide here at this time but fishing can be very good in the deepest holes nearest the dam. The EW is a year around fishery. Fly fishing remains slow on the Bridge. Tubing the dam area with a heavy sinking tip using Loebergs, leeches, punk perch, or agent orange is your best bet.  Let’s all do a snow dance to bring this great fishery back next season!
Season on the Bridge closes 11-15.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort,com) reports:
Caples Lake Resort is CLOSED 10/28/13 – for the Summer Season  -
as we switch gears changing from Summer to Winter.
HOWEVER, We will offer Cabin 7 During November!

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
Carson River East:
A report of two anglers fishing downstream from the S.R. 4 bridge and catching about 10 rainbows, up to 2-3 pounds.
Closes on November 15, upstream from Hangman's Bridge.
Carson River West:
Closes on November 15.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Chetco River opened to chinook fishing Nov. 2.
The temporary closure of the mainstem upstream of river mile 2.2 will end, but chinook salmon anglers will also want to take note that a new permanent regulation is in effect closing the Chetco River upstream of Nook Creek to chinook salmon retention.
Because of the continued low flows in the Chetco, anglers will want to check for any new temporary fishing regulations that may take effect for fishing the river. Regulations changes will be posted at most of the popular fishing spots and on ODFW’s web site.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Close on November 15.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlake.com) reports:
Dear Don,
There will only be three more fishing reports for the 2013 fishing season.
It was an excellent week of fishing at Convict Lake.
As the season winds down and the temperatures cool, the catch is definitely hot. Quite a few 2 and 3 pounders were recorded at the store this week.
The "Morrison's Cash Bonus Weekend" is going on this weekend and there will be $2000 in cash prizes. Since the start of our Ambush at the Lake Fishing Derby September 2nd, we have entered 73 anglers into the raffle comprised of $6,000 in Resort Prizes.
Catch of the Week:
Congratulations to Veronica Bagley from Yucaipa, CA with a lunker from Convict Lake. Veronica was using a Trout Teaser and was posted up on the South Shore when she landed a stout 3 pound 13 ounce rainbow.
Way to go Veronica!
Other notable catches this week:
Jake & Allison Winkelman from San Dimas, CA both landed quality fish.
Jake's fish was 3 pound 1 ounce and Allison's was 2 pound 7 ounce.
Both were using a Pink Power Worm and they were fishing at the Jetty.
To see more fish photos visit our 2013 Fishing Gallery.
Steve Wolfanger of Sacramento, CA with an excellent catch. Only 5 ounces off from being the "catch of the week". Steve landed a 3 pound 10 ounce rainbow using Glitter Powerbait. He was fishing at the North Shore.
Ed Contreras of Azusa, CA hooked a 2 pound and 15 ounce rainbow.
Ed was using Salmon Eggs and was fishing at the South Shore.
John Riker of Huntington Beach, CA caught a beautiful 2 pound and 11 ounce rainbow. John was using Power bait while fishing at the South Shore.
Tactics/Bait:
A variety of different baits and lures were hooking fish this week.
Some nice fish (2 pound plus) were caught with Trout Teasers, Gulp Power Worms (Pink), Mepps spinners and Marvel Flies.
Salmon Eggs and Night Crawlers were also productive.
The most successful Power bait colors were yellow and salmon peach. Any color with glitter worked well.
The South Shore was the hottest spot this week.
Other locations to try are the Inlet, Outlet, Windy Point, North Shore, Jetty, West Shore, Creek, Handicap Pier, and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Tasmanian Devil, Green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Trout Teasers, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Rooster Tails, and Bite-on Fury Shad on Power bait.
Here is a list of recommended flies:
Dry Flies:
Adams, Female Adams, Cutter's Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Black/Red Ants, Sierra Bright Dot, Royal Coachman and Hoppers.
Streamers:
Wooly Bugger (black, brown, olive, or green), Mutuka (black, brown, olive, or green), Hornberg, and Muddler Minnows.

Lows could range from low-20s to high-30s. Make sure to check the National Weather Service site before heading out. Temps could rise or fall dramatically from day to day. Here is the National Weather Service link that is usually quite accurate: 7-Day Forecast Convict Lake.
Sunrise - Sunset:
Sunrise this week 7:22 am - 6:28 am and Sunset 5:57 pm - 4:51 pm.
Stocking:
150 pounds of Alpers were stocked in the lake on Thursday, October 31th.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Marina and main gate now closed.
Float tubing ok until Nov.15. Fishing has been good in the 6  Bays area.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Water temps are getting lower everywhere on the lake.
Algae is a goner and the water is crystal clear over most of the lake.
WARNING-
The lake is much lower than previous years.
Watch out for Pelican Point which sticks out way into the lake.
Also the islands just north of there are popping out. Watch for buoys and go slow coming in when it is rough as buoys are small and tough to see in chop.
Fishing conditions:
Continues Excellent. Leighton Springs in front of the springs and just off the point at Alligator continue to produce in roughly 13 ft of water.
Big Hilton is steady fairly deep in the bay daily which has more smaller fish but a fat guy here and there in 7 to 10 ft of water. Lots of 14"-15" Browns.
Now we add to the list Crooked Creek which is hot one day and off the next but can be crowded.
Lastly now that most of the docks have been removed and the rest today the marina (Whiskey Bay) has become a hot spot.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Fishing has been excellent this fall.
No boats, no problem! The shore fishing along sections of the lake with steep drop-offs have been providing some great opportunities. Six Bays, the Hiltons, & Crooked Creek are all holding concentrations of fish.
Tubers and shore fly fishers are doing well using still water nymphing and streamer tactics. Loebergs, leeches, seal buggers, punk perch, & agent orange streamers are good calls. Use broken back midges, crystal emergers, crystal pupa, zebra and tiger midges below an Under-cator.
Fish are in 6-12 feet depending on location.
Lake closes 11-15 for the season.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
A report of good fly fishing from shore or float tubes in shallow water.

EAGLE LAKE, CALIF:
Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy's Guide Service (530-283-4103) (www.bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
I will be spending some time during the middle of this month up at Eagle Lake running both my standard light tackle trolling trips as well as some fly fishing excursions.
Despite all the negative press and low water the fishing at Eagle has been great with solid numbers and light fishing pressure.
I still have several days available during this mid November run at Eagle Lake. If you are interested in a great late fall season fishing trip get a hold of me ASAP and we can lock it down.

Closed until May 01, 2014.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is  down to  5 CFS. Try a hopper or stimulator  with a buckskin nymphs caddis pupa or small pheasant tails as a dropper. Some decent dry fly fishing in the afternoon with CDC caddis and Hot Creek caddis. Colder nights and shorter days are helping to break down the heavy weed growth.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Flows at 6 CFS as of 10/30. Clear.
Fishing conditions:
Good. With the weeds dying off nymphing is a little easier. Dry fly action will be good early morning and evening. Don't forget, the mayflies are back!

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF:
A report of two anglers fishing for about two hours by the dam, and catching and releasing average-sized trout on Chartreuse-colored Gulp.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Grant - Gull - June - Silver Lakes and Rush Creek:
Silver Lake still seems to be the best for float tube fly rodders fishing black or purple woolly buggers on full sink lines doing  well.
Rush Creek flow is 39 CFS.
Royal coachmen, elk hair caddis, prince nymphs and copper Johns.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River:
Trout anglers have found good action while fishing with night crawlers or cut anchovies. The anchovies have fooled striped bass as well. While most stripers are in the one- to three-pound range, there are reports of anglers catching fish up to eight-pounds. With high winds bringing in a cold front the fish should begin feeding a little heavier.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:

MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANGEMENT AREA, NEV:
Hinkson Slough - North Pond - West Walker River - Crappie Pond:
Closed until the second Saturday in February, 2014.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Striped bass have been somewhat elusive for some anglers, as the fish don’t seem to be following their usual habits. Just when a person thinks they have a feel for what the fish are doing they change things up. Be flexible with each outing and ready with various lure and bait options. Variety is the key to enticing these fish. Jigging spoons in about 50 feet of water has worked near the mouth of canyons. Those anglers who have been able to find and catch shad also have found good success.
With the new moon on Nov. 3 anglers can expect the night bite to improve; for best results fish under a light. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are hitting on hard plastics and crankbaits. They can be found toward the back of coves in water as shallow as six inches.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The striper bite has been light, but the action for the smallmouth and largemouth bass has made up for it.
Work the backs of coves using top-water lures and plugs.
Areas with submerged debris or rocky points are prime habitat.
Boaters need to be aware of their surroundings and maintain a close eye on the water conditions.
Annual water fluctuations are set to take place and will temporarily drop the water level from 640 feet to about 633 by mid-November.
Boaters need to be aware of changing water conditions and may experience temporary closures of the following launch ramps: Willow Beach, Cottonwood Cove, Katherine Landing, Princess Cove, Arizona Telephone Cove, and Nevada Telephone Cove.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational Dungeness crabbing in the ocean is closed Oct. 16- Nov. 30.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, lingcod, and cabezon is now open at all depths. The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two). Retention of 1 cabezon per day is still allowed.
Fishing for lingcod has been very good in the Coos Bay area.
Chinook fishing south of Humbug Mt. is now closed.
The state waters recreational chinook season off the mouth of the Elk River will be open Nov. 1 through 30, refer to open area and special regulations.
Fishing for coho in the ocean closed on Sept. 30.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Closes on November 15, downstream from the Benton Bridge.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Flow up a bit to 68 CFS. Special regulations still in effect upstream of the Benton Crossing Bridge and from the monument to Crowley Lake.
The section from the bridge to the monument is closed.
Fishing is fair. Try egg patterns, San Juan worms, Prince nymphs and copper John's.  Elk hair caddis or cdc caddis on the surface.
It's important to cover lots of water as the fish are scattered
Lower Owens River:
Water flow dropped to 85 CFS. Fishing is good Try WD-40's,  pheasant tails and hares ears. Good dry fly action with para caddis and cdc caddis.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Water conditions:
68 CFS as of 10/30.
Fishing conditions:
Upper Owens is fishing well, and with fall upon us, hooking big Crowley fish in the river is a definite possibility.
Nymphing has been good just above the lake, try attractors like copper johns and prince nymphs. Dead drifting or stripping a streamer with an attractor nymph for a dropper will find bigger fish. Dry fly opportunity is best above the bridge right now, with scatterings of caddis and mayflies throughout the day as it warms up. Terrestrials like ants and hoppers have been getting looks also... try a dry/ dropper set up.
Remember the Upper Owens is closed from the bridge down to the monument, and no bait is allowed.
FYI - Bring some cold weather gear cause the temps have dropped!
Lower Owens River:
Water conditions:
Good. Flows are at 84 CFS as of 10/30.
Fishing conditions:
Good. Flows being so low, fishing has been great. Lot of surface action throughout the day. Nymphing is preferred if targeting for Mr. Hog Johnson!
Owens River Gorge:
Water conditions:
Great. 50 CFS as of 10/30.
Fishing conditions:
Alright. DWP are doing some maintenance so water level can increase in a short period of time.
Pleasant Valley Reservoir:
Water conditions:
Good.
Fishing conditions:
Since the lake is high most of the fish have moved into the stream section of the lake.
Rock Creek:
Water conditions:
42 CFS as of 10/30. Clear!!
Fishing conditions:
Really good dry fly fishing. Mayflies will start hatching so little surface flies will work. Don't forget about little terrestrials. Even though the season is kinda over for them, the fish won't be hesitant to crush an ant or hopper.
Rush Creek:
Water conditions:
Good. 35 CFS as of 10/30 below Grant Lake to Hwy 395.
39 CFS as of 10/30 in between Silver Lake and Grant Lake.
Fishing conditions:
Fair to good. Good dry fly fishing right now.
Mostly with terrestrials and ants. Dry/Dropper for nymphing.
Really hit the undercut banks in the general reg section of Rush Creek(between Silver lake and Grant Lake).
Dead drifting streamers under and indicator is the best method.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
I would like to see more water flowing here to assist the migrating fish coming up from Crowley; however conditions are pretty good overall.
You will need to cover quite a bit of water to locate the larger fish “podding” up for the fall spawn.
Nymphing with mayfly imitations like assassin bird’s nest, flashback PT’s, and broken back midges are good choices on the warmer days and during emergences after lunch.
On the cooler days and morning periods I suggest you use attractor patterns like SJ worms, glow bugs, and egg imitations, or streamers.
After 11-15 the UO will be closed to all anglers downstream from the Benton Bridge.
It will remain open with restrictions above the bridge year around.
Middle Owens River:
We have not seen this many large trout consistently coming to net in many years.  I would rate this as the best fall ever for trophy fish.
Flows are at very, very, low levels and we hope they will not decrease any further.  85 CFS is the current release below the dam at Pleasant Valley Reservoir. Wading the MO is as good as it gets.
The Trico mayfly hatch has been fantastic. These are very small mays, #20-24 & are not everyone’s cup of tea. The fish are keying on this emergence beginning around 1 pm most days.
There has also been some sporadic caddis activity here; however this hatch will soon be fading as cooler water temps will prevail after these cold fronts move through. Have a selection of small bird’s nest, flashback PT’s, & crystal olive caddis nymphs.
At these flows a dry/dropper bead head or emerger rig is a good choice during or around mid-day.
Streamers will get you larger fish. During spawning periods trout can become territorial and will attack streamers even though they are not necessarily feeding. Loebergs & Spruce-A-Bu’s are my go to patterns.  Purple and black seal buggers are also a good choice for the low light periods.  #6-12 imitate the current baitfish profiles.
Light to moderate sinking tips are adequate at current flows.

A report of catching a number of "Shakers" early in the morning while trolling just south of the Pelican Point boat ramp.
