Five Carson City residents vying for Ward 3 seat on Board of Supervisors, appointment on Nov. 4

Event Date:
November 4, 2020 (All day)

While the seat for Ward 2 will be filled following the election on Nov. 4, another seat is open and will be filled by appointment.

The seat for Ward 3 is currently held by Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who will be vacating now that she has been elected Carson City’s mayor.

Five candidates have applied to serve the remaining two years of Bagwell’s term, and will be appointed by the Board.

The five candidates are as follows:

Stan Jones. Jones describes himself as a “successful, longtime business owner with a distinguished military career and a proven record of community service as a volunteer and service on numerous boards.” Jones, along with his wife, own and operate the Purple Avocado and has been a member on many Carson City boards, including the Ron Wood Center, the V&T Railroad Commission, the Carson City Arts and Culture Committee, and more. Chris Pattison. Pattison is the co-owner of Carson Demolition, and served in the United States Air Force. He was previously a volunteer with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, and has participated in the Nevada Day cleanup with Muscle Powered for the past three years. Pattison says he wants to join the Board to give back to the community and help the place that he loves as best he can. Renee Plain. Plain is the CEO and founder of of In Plain Sight Marketing, and has “15 years of communications, marketing, public relations, community and government relations experience.” She has served on numerous non-profit and citizen advisory boards in Carson City, and has been a “trusted advisor to Carson City leaders, including Mayor Bob Crowell, Sheriff Furlong, Supervisor Karen Abowd, and Supervisor Molly Walt.” Plain currently sits on the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Partnership Carson City and has participated in many others in the past. Plain says that one of the reasons she wants to serve on the Board is to “give representation to a large demographic that has not had representation in over 8 years,” which are those under 45 years old and working families. James Wells. Wells retired from the State of Nevada in 2018 where he served as the first Director for the Governor’s Finance Office. He was the co-valedictorian for the Carson High School graduating class of 1985 and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1989. Wells says that he wants to serve on the Board because he is a “former State department director and State Budget Director. (He) was a high level State employee during the Great Recession learning to do the same work, and sometimes more, with fewer resources both in terms of dollars and personnel.” He says that those experiences give him “great insight into the inner workings of government.” To view his application, click here. https://www.carson.org/home/showdocument?id=72768

Robey Willis. Willis previously served as a Justice of the Peace from 1989 to 2011, and then a Senior Judge from 2011 to 2020. He currently serves as Chairman for the Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, and served as Chairman of Nevada’s 150th Anniversary Fair at Fuji Park in 2014. He is currently a member of Kiwanis, and has previously served on a number of boards and clubs within the city. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Nevada, Reno. Willis says he wants to serve on the board, “To pay back Carson City for being so good to me. Also, I am a person who needs to have a purpose in life and being a Supervisor would fulfill that need. Finally, I have been active in the community for a long time and know quite a bit about how our city government operates.” To view his application, click here. https://www.carson.org/home/showdocument?id=72628

The Board of Supervisors will interview candidates during a meeting held on Nov. 4, and will appoint the same day. The meeting will be broadcast for the public.
