Teamwork shines as Carson Middle School students, staff do Wetlands Habitat cleanup

Carson Middle School STEM instructor, Katelyn O'Laughlin organized her students and staff members for a fall clean-up event in the Wetlands habitat. Efforts will continue Wednesday, Nov. 4 from when school ends at 2:15 to 4 p.m.

Five Carson City residents vying for Ward 3 seat on Board of Supervisors, appointment on Nov. 4

While the seat for Ward 2 will be filled following the election on Nov. 4, another seat is open and will be filled by appointment.

The seat for Ward 3 is currently held by Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who will be vacating now that she has been elected Carson City’s mayor.

South Carson Street project in final stretches as fall road work continues around Carson City

Here is the South Carson Street Project and Carson City area road report for the week Oct. 12-18, 2020. Among the construction work delays, there will be periodic closures of the intersection of 5th Street at Carson Street throughout the week as part of the South Carson Street Project.

Fishing Report: Fish are still biting despite lower lake levels, river clean up planned for Oct. 17

Hello fellow anglers, Fall is definitely here. Renee and I took a trip through Alpine County last week to enjoy the fall colors. Many trees have turned, while others are just starting to get their true colors.

To get a good look at the viewing, venture up through Highway 88 from Woodfords to Caples Lake. Another good area of fall color viewing is from Woodfords on Highway 89 up to Kinney reservoir on Highway 4 .

Apple picking, state park hikes, live music and more highlight weekend events in Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Franktown Apples in Washoe Valley is hosting apple picking Friday through Sunday. In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Nevada State Parks will have a fee-free day on Saturday filled with hikes and tours. 'Clean Up The Lake' removes over 8,000 lbs of trash from Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake

Clean Up the Lake, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has removed 8,183 pounds of trash from Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe.

Beginning in July 2020, the Clean Up The Lake dive teams completed a circumnavigated SCUBA clean up of Donner Lake, covering every inch of the 8 mile shoreline at depths of 0-25 feet removing all the smaller trash they could find that resulted in 5,151.5 pounds of trash removed from Donner Lake compared to 3,032 pounds of trash removed from the depths of Lake Tahoe.

Celebrate, volunteer for National Public Lands Day with cleanup of path along Carson City freeway

They wore pajamas, were wrapped in blankets, and carried cups of Dutch Bros and Starbucks as they gathered to celebrate the beginning of their senior year and the almost end of the soothing summer weather. The Class of 2020-2021, while practicing social distancing and wearing the latest fashion in face masks, gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 4 on the bleachers of the CHS football field to watch their sun rise.

Comment period on new draft plan for Anaconda mine in Lyon County begins Aug. 20

On August 20, 2020, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Corrective Actions will be opening the public comment period for its Draft Proposed Plan: Operable Unit 8 (OU-8) Peripheral Areas located within the Anaconda Copper Mine Site in Lyon County. The public comment period will remain open through September 19, 2020.

Team of scuba divers begin underwater cleanup efforts at Donner Lake

Colin West, executive director of Clean Up the Lake, a non-profit organization, along with three other scuba divers will be braving the cold water of Donner Lake in Truckee, Calif. for two weeks in an effort to fight trash pollution that began July 6.

Annual July 5 Tahoe beach cleanup nets 500 pounds of trash, 3,495 cigarette butts, 6,515 pieces of plastic

Despite COVID-19 keeping many from Tahoe beaches this season, somehow it didn’t seem to stop the trash from accumulating, but it also didn’t stop Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers from holding their annual beach cleanup.

According to the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Communications Manager Chris Joseph, the beach clean up kept things smaller this year to make sure social distancing practices were upheld for the safety of volunteers.

Former Lyon County mine sees revitalization, restoration work continue

MASON VALLEY — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection says work to revitalize and restore the former Anaconda Copper Mine site continues to progress on schedule. The first phase of the project began in August 2019, and all necessary construction work at the site is on track to be complete by 2029.

Carson City lawn service leads charge Sunday with Goni Canyon cleanup

On Sunday, April 5, 2020, the crew from Green Thumb Lawn Service took the initiative to clean trash, discarded furniture and other items dumped in Goni Canyon in Carson City. Thanks to Bob Wells and crew for all their hard work.

I’ve been watching the apple buds, waiting to see swelling begin, waiting for color to start showing. Last week I was excited to finally see a bit of color. Then, snow and overnight lows in the low twenties hit, which is just like last year, when we had no apples. I hope the cold doesn’t kill the blossoms and my apple crop again this year.

On a recent holiday weekend, hundreds of visitors snapped selfies with a two-legged bear while sledding at Lake Tahoe. The “Take Care” bear mingled with families reminding them to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.

Central Lyon County Fire and Storey County fire agencies were called Sunday afternoon to a structure fire in the 300 block of Martin Lane near Six Mile Canyon in the Mark Twain area.

Carson City deputies arrest men for possession of drugs, bottled mercury

A 31-year-old Gardnerville man and a 29-year-old transient man were arrested in the area of the Goni Water Tower after deputies were alerted to a man in a vehicle next to the tower who appeared to be incapacitated and found they were allegedly using drugs and were in possession of several bottles of mercury.
