WNC Baseball: Young Wildcats to wrap up scrimmage season with ‘Intra-squad World Series’
Western Nevada College’s baseball program isn’t about to let the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals have all of the October fun on the diamond.
The Wildcats are holding their annual Intrasquad Player World Series Wednesday through Saturday at John L. Harvey Field on WNC’s Carson City campus. Game times are 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 12:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
Sophomore catcher Brandon Lapointe (Arbor High School, Las Vegas) and freshman catcher Tim Lichty (Galena High School, Reno) are captaining the opposing teams.
“The Players World Series is always the highlight of the fall and will provide one last opportunity to everyone to make their mark on the team and secure their spot on the spring roster or in the starting lineup,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore.
The winning team is rewarded with a team BBQ dinner and bragging rights for the fall, according to Whittemore. The five-game series marks the culmination of the Wildcats’ six-week scrimmage schedule, which was a challenge this year as the Wildcats are fielding a very young team.
Sophomore Connor Zwetsch (Westview High School, Beaverton, Ore), sophomore Cody Kerns (Elko High School, Elko, Nev.), freshman Matt Young (Reno High School), and Ty Fox (Crater High School, Central Point, Ore.) have stood out on the mound. Zwetsch has pitched to a 0.69 earned run average in 13 innings, Kerns has fanned 31 hitters in 19 innings, Young has allowed a miniscule 0.9 walks per nine innings and Fox has been durable by logging 20 1/3 innings.
Driving the offense have been sophomore third baseman Kody Reynolds (McQueen High School, Reno), freshman outfielder/first baseman DJ Peters (Glendora High School, Glendora, Calif.), freshman infielder David Modler (Rancho High School, Las Vegas) and sophomore outfielder Jake Bennett (Forest Grove High School, Forest Grove, Ore.). Reynolds has knocked in 19 runs, Peters has batted .438, Modler has scored 20 runs and Bennett has produced a .534 on-base average.
“Overall, the challenge in front of the team is tremendous and the amount of work that is going to be required to compete with the top teams in the Scenic West is both daunting and exciting,” Whittemore said. “We are used to the role of the underdog and we will embrace that role and attempt to get better faster than any other team in the country.”
