Senator Square: Nevada Week of Respect

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

  • The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
  • The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
  • There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.
  • English teachers are doing writing assignments around respect.
  • Freshman Transitions teachers are talking about bullying in their classes and cyberbullying in particular.
  • We are going to "get our blue on" on Friday asking everyone to wear blue to demonstrate CHS as a bully free zone.

SPEECH & DEBATE NEWS
Carson High Speech and Debate competed in the first tournament of the season at Damonte Ranch. Twenty members of CHS debate were among the 472 entries in the tournament. Both new members and returning veterans had success at this first meet. Nathan Mersino, competing in his first tournament placed 6th in novice Lincoln Douglas speaking points debating whether teens ought to have the right to make autonomous medical decisions. Captain Bailee Barber placed 5th in senior Lincoln Douglas speaking points. Captain Sawyer Barnett placed 6th in senior Lincoln Douglas speaker points, 4th in Senior Original Oratory with his piece on gender equality, and 3rd overall in senior Lincoln Douglas. First time competitor Evan Cherpeski placed 6th in novice Impromptu, and 2nd overall in novice Lincoln Douglas Debate. Duy Khanh Nguyen won the support of his judges and peers to take 1st place in novice Congressional Debate, moving him into senior division. Sadie Share was elected presiding officer of her senior Congressional Debate chamber and moved on to win 1st place in her room as well. Assistant Captain Shane Morton placed 1st overall in senior Humorous Interpretation with his piece titled “Sesame, Life on the Street”. The team looks to roll off this early success into a busy few months. The next tournament will be held Oct 15th and 16th at Churchill County High School, Carson debaters will also be competing in the Poetry Out Loud competition, and hosting the 2nd escape Carson High Zombie run Oct 23rd at CHS.

VOLLEYBALL NEWS
The CHS Volleyball team will be collecting pairs of shoes through October 9th. Shoes can be in any shape, and size, and condition. Anything will be collecting including slipper, flip flops, runners, or boots. Any donations can be sent to Erin Been at the high school or dropped off in the athletic office.

October is Cancer Awareness Month. In order to increase awareness and raise money for those battling cancer here in Carson City, staff and students will be wearing pink jerseys on Mondays. Also the October 2nd football game vs. Damonte will be a pink out. Get your pink jersey from the student store or from Erin Been now. Sizes and quantities are limited. Cost is $12.

YEARBOOK
Orders for the 2016 Carneta yearbook will be taken every Friday during lunch in the north foyer. Place your order for your book of irreplaceable memories.

How about saving $25? You can do that by ordering your Buddy Ad page for the 2016 Carneta yearbook by Sept. 30. Buy an ad for the Carneta celebrating your time at CHS and save $25 on your order. NHS
National Honor Society is hosting a blood drive on October 1st in the small gym. The sign-up sheet is posted outside room 227. Community members are welcome to donate as well and you can email eglenn@carson.k12.nv.us to sign up for a time. Find the hero in you, sign up to donate and save three lives.

WINTER SPORTS SIGNUPS
Signups will be held Monday, Oct. 12, 5:30 - 6:30 pm in the North Foyer. Returning athletes for 2015-2016 can pick up a form from the Athletic office or winter sport coaches beginning Monday, Oct. 5th. The online registration form for new athletes only must be completed by parent(s)/guardian(s) with the student present. The form should be viewed and discussed with the student-athlete. Click on the link “District's Athletic Registration Page”, scroll to bottom of page to the large black box. Complete and print the athletic form.
**CHS students must be cleared by the library and finance before turning in their sports packet, they will not be approved until they are cleared. Deadline for signups will be Monday, Nov. 5, 2015. For further information, please contact the Athletic Department at 283-1900.

D.C. INAUGURATION TRIP
Witness history come alive before your eyes! When you visit the nation’s capital during Presidential Inauguration, you become a part of American history. Whether seeing the President take the "Oath of Office" or participating in your own Inaugural Dance, a trip to D.C. during the 2017 Presidential Inauguration is a journey that you and your friends will remember for years to come! Come to a parent information meeting on Thursday, Oct. 1 in Senator Square at 6:30 PM. See Mrs. Golik in room 243 for more information.

COLLEGE OPTIONS
Representatives from Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Stanford will be conducting a student and parent information session on Sunday, September 27th at 7:30 p.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. More information is available in the Guidance Office.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
This week’s student of the week is Caroline Gabica. Caroline is both the basketball and football team manager, involved in Student Council and National Honor Society. Caroline always goes out of her way to make everyone feel welcome. Thanks Caroline for all your hard work at Carson High.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
This week’s spotlight is on senior Ethan Lopes. Ethan currently has a 4.8 weighted GPA and is earning straight A’s in his course load, which includes five AP courses. Ethan is a busy young man. Not only does he have to keep up with his rigorous schoolwork, he is also very involved in activities both in as well as out of school. Ethan has held offices in the National Honor Society, Chess Club and Robotics Club. He is also the co-captain of the Carson High School Cross Country team. Ethan is a talented violinist. Playing from the age of three, Ethan has been a member of the Carson High School String Orchestra, the NMEA All-State Ochestra, and Strazz, a string jazz group, as well as playing with the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra. Ethan’s out of school activities include doing astronomical research for the RECON and Muon projects. Ethan enjoys running, often competing in local 5K runs. Ethan is still narrowing his college list, but his list of prospects include Stanford, Carlton, Swarthmore, Whitman, Amherst and Williams. Ethan plans to earn his PhD in Astronomy and Planetary Geology. We at Carson High School are extremely proud of Ethan and can’t wait to see what he does next!

With Nevada’s primary elections approaching, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reminds community members that political signage is not allowed on state highway property.

Federal regulations and Nevada state law prohibit political and advertising signage on public highway property, including but not limited to political signs, yard sale/event signs, and realtor or business signage.

It is important to know that state road property often extends beyond the roadside, fence line, or sidewalk of interstates, freeways, highways, and urban state roads/streets.

The application deadline for Mile High Band Association’s 2024 Jazz & Beyond Festival art contest is Friday, May 31. Northern Nevada artists, including teachers and students are invited to apply, and participation is free.

Selected entries in the competition will be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover. Festival T-shirts may also feature the winning design.

The Sierra Nevada section of the Society of Women Engineers recognized several Carson City students and one teacher at the 2024 Night of STEM Star Awards in Reno, Friday, April 26.

The honorees were recognized for displaying remarkable talent and commitment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). These young scholars not only excelled academically but also engaged in innovative projects and extracurricular activities that have enhanced their learning and impacted their community.

I usually whistle past the obituaries, but Larry Young caught my eye. He was a scientist who discovered Love Potion Number Nine. Yes, Larry unearthed a chemical that heightens desire, not that the world needs it. A drug that would diminish desire might do the world more good in the long run.

Today was a very productive day working in the yard. The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

As the summer sun begins to heat up, so does the excitement at Dayton Pop Warner as local athletes gear up for a two-day strength and conditioning camp.

Sunday in Carson City brought out a black bear with a shiny brown coat that lumbered through a yard in early morning light, probably looking for breakfast.

In a systematic approach to improve water quality, Lyon County Utilities will be conducting water main flushing Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14-15 in the Rose Peak area (roughly between Flowery Avenue and Sheep Camp Road) in Dayton, Nev.

The 2nd annual Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival is returning May 17-19 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. This is a free community event that benefits the Center for Hope and Healing.

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.

Carson High School will host its First Annual Art Expo, showcasing the talents of its student artists in photography, graphic design, drawing, painting and ceramics Thursday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m.
