Air quality 'hazardous' Thursday morning in Douglas, continued unhealthy in Carson City
Air quality in Douglas County reached the "hazardous"level again Thursday morning, the second time this week, while air quality in Carson City is in the "unhealthy" stage due to smoke from wildfires in the region, according to AirNow.gov.
The Air Quality Index monitor in Gardnerville had a reading of 326 as of 8:30 a.m., causing conditions to become hazardous to all people. In Carson City the AQI was 168, with smoke-filled skies from the north side of town to the south side. Conditions may worsen as the morning progresses, forecasters say.
Monday also reached the "hazardous" level in Douglas County and "very unhealthy" in Carson City.
Douglas County health officials posted an advisory on its Facebook site noting that the "very young and very old, pregnant women, and those with heart and lung conditions, especially asthma and COPD patients, are most susceptible to side effects from wildfire smoke. It is strongly recommended for Nevada residents to avoid heavy activity and monitor the air quality index before spending extended periods outdoors."
Health officials advise to stay indoors and keep your doors and windows closed to limit your home's exposure to smoke. Additionally, people should avoid heat exposure and consume adequate amounts of fluids to prevent dehydration.
A number of fires across northern and eastern California continue to bring hazy conditions and degraded air quality to northeast California, the Sierra, and western Nevada.
Areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Douglas County south through Alpine and Mono counties downwind of the Donnell Fire. Poor air quality may also reach out into southern Lyon County and western Mineral County, according to the National Weather Service.
