Carson City area road report for week of May 9-15

Here is this week’s Carson City area road report for the week of May 9-15, 2016: Work continues on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. Motorists can expect the following impacts this week:

— North Carson St. will remain one lane in each direction
— Sophia and Washington to the west of Carson Street will be closed to Curry
— All other side streets will be open
— Days of closures subject to change due to weather

Downtown businesses are open during construction. For details regarding traffic impacts, please refer to the material provided in local media outlets or go to carsonproud.com for more information. These sources are updated weekly throughout the duration of the project.

Lane closures with flagger controlled traffic at the following locations due to utility/road work from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:

— Center Drive south of Clear Creek Avenue to Topsy Lane, Monday through Friday
— Wilma Way, Monday
— Simons Court and Evergreen Drive, Tuesday through Thursday
— Carson Street and Hot Springs Road intersection, the northbound left turn lane will be closed, Wednesday

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility and road work. Please follow detours:
— Division Street between Fleischmann Way and Long Street, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Long Street between Division and Mountain Streets, Wednesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Topsy Lane between Center Drive and Lyla Lane, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Race Track Road between Bigelow Drive and Schulz Way, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local track only
— Snyder Avenue between Ponderosa Drive and Bigelow Drive, Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Northbound U.S. 395 lanes between Clear Creek Avenue and Snyder Avenue will be reduced from three to two until May 13.

Periodic, nighttime, lane and ramp closures will take place on southbound I-580 and alternate U.S. 395 in southern Washoe Valley throughout the summer, includes northbound and southbound ramp closures for Bellevue Bridge and southbound ramp closures south of Eastlake Boulevard.

Here is the Lake Tahoe and Sierra area roadwork plan from Caltrans for the week of May 8-14, 2016:

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work has resumed on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on an $8 million project from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue in Tahoma, installing curb and gutter and drainage systems to collect and treat stormwater. The highway is also being resurfaced. The project will be completed this spring.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work has begun on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to just north of the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project will construct new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repave a four-mile section of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work has resumed on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway is being resurfaced. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work has resumed on Placer County’s “Core of the Core” phase of the $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. Highway work includes installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) under the Newcastle Union Pacific Railroad bridge: westbound motorists can expect one of the three freeway lanes to be closed from 7 a.m. Monday, May 9 through 5 p.m. Thursday, May 26 for roadway construction. Significant traffic delays are expected.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) at Newcastle: Motorists can expect the exit ramp to Newcastle from westbound I-80 to be closed from 7 a.m. Monday, May 9 through 5 p.m. Thursday, May 26 for roadway construction. The ramp from Newcastle to westbound I-80 as well as the Newcastle exit/on-ramp from/to eastbound I-80 will remain open.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Sierra College Boulevard to Newcastle Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures and on-ramp closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Saturday for bridge work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday on the Brace, Gilardi, Horseshoe Bar, King, Penryn, Newcastle and Magra overcrossings for bridge work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Nevada County) from Prosser Village to the 80/267/89N Junction: Motorists can expect right lane and right shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 for guardrail repair.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Nevada County) from Acid Flat Bridge to Sierra County line: Motorists can expect right lane and right shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 9-10 for guardrail repair.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Nevada County) from Hinton Road undercrossing to Floriston off-ramp: Motorists can expect right lane and right shoulder closures for guardrail repair from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for guardrail repair.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) from the Kingvale undercrossing to the Nevada County line: Motorists can expect right lane and right shoulder closures from 12:01 a.m. Monday, May 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 13 for concrete slab replacement.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Highway 20 junction to Placer County line: Motorists can expect right lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 9 for bridge work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from the Magra overhead to the Alta Road undercrossing: Motorists can expect alternating lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, May 9-12 for crack seal operation.

State Route 49 (Yuba/Sierra County) from Marysville Road to Wild Plum Road: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for lane and shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 9 through Thursday, May 12 for ditch cleaning.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Highway 20 interchange to South Fork Yuba River Bridge: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for lane, median and shoulder closures from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 9-13 for pavement repair.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Newtown Road to Highway 20 Junction: Motorists can expect alternating lane and shoulder restrictions from midnight to 6 a.m. Sunday, May 8 for striping operations.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Highway 20 Junction to South Sidehill Viaduct: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 9-13 for pavement repair.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Wild Plum Road to Nevada Drive: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder restrictions from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 9 through Wednesday, May 11 for tree work.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from westbound 80 ramps to the 80/89 South Junction: Motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday May 10-11 for bridge work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from McKinney Drive to South Street: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls and shoulder closures from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 11-12 for utility work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Fern Street to Cherry Street: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, May 10-12 for utility work.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Little Truckee River to Webber Lake/Cottonwood Creek Road: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, May 9-12 for crack seal operations.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Old Truckee Road to Cold Creek Campground: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 12 for core drilling operations.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from Sulphur Creek Road to Plumas County line: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 for core drilling operations.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Lane to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect lane closures (one way traffic control) and right shoulder restrictions from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13 for highway construction.

Dayton, Nevada - Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) will offer a free information night for parents and other community members on the health risks of youth vaping, strategies for preventing vaping and ways to support youth in leading healthy lives.

This year 17 students attended the state FFA Convention and participated in 7 different contests. One of Carson High School's own students, Melanie Burrett, was elected the 2024-25 Nevada State Reporter. Meanwhile, Maximillian Bushey was placed on one the Nom Com team for the State Office during the convention.

Mark Twain Days (Year Two) was yet another triumph, particularly the group photo, where every kid and her grandmother sported humongous mustachios. I can’t wait to see the print. My personal favorite event was, “Connections.” A hundred folks gathered together upstairs in the Brewery Arts Center to share personal connections that improved their lives.

UPDATE 12:57PM: A foreign national was cited for failing to maintain lanes and failure to yield, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office sergeant. The driver, who is from out of the country, led officers on a slow-speed pursuit earlier Monday morning.

A brief vehicle pursuit Monday morning where the driver of a white Kia failed to yield to Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies ended with a felony traffic stop near the intersection of William and Roop Street. The male driver was detained and is being questioned.

Western Nevada College celebrates the achievements of its 2023-24 graduates on Monday in Carson City, with a second ceremony planned for Thursday, May 23 in Fallon.

Collectively, the two traditional ceremonies will honor a record-tying 617 graduates who are approved to receive a record 692 degrees and Certificates of Achievement.

An approximately 14 foot by 60 foot mobile home is disabled in the center turn lane at the corner of Fairview Drive and Steamboat Drive in Carson City and has disrupted the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect delays through Monday morning.

On May 18, 2024, at around 12:50 a.m., Carson City Sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Christopher Gorham. A drug-detection canine was used to conduct a sniff of the vehicle. Deputies searched the vehicle and located drug paraphernalia along with an explosive device.

An 1884 Carson City Morgan silver dollar donated by Northern Nevada Coin is being raffled by the Friends of the Nevada State Museum. The raffle will highlight the Tin Cup Roundup fundraiser planned for Saturday, September 21 (5 to 8 pm). Proceeds from the raffle and the event will support the restoration of a 1967 Chevrolet pickup truck for the State Museum.

Deputies are investigating a pipe bomb that was discovered during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. That is my biggest problem. I do NOT make a good first impression.

On Friday, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada announced its expansion into Minden.
