Reno’s notorious mid-century divorce ranches are back in the spotlight. The Nevada Historical Society will present What Was Really Going On At Those Nevada Divorce Ranches? Fact and Fiction next month as part of its popular Writer’s Wednesday series.

With anywhere from a light dusting in the capital city to an inch or more from Reno into Washoe Valley, winter weather has arrived again, with a strong system shaping up to drop several feet of snow in the Sierra and several inches along the valley floors, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Despite the changes in learning platforms brought on by the coronavirus, Western Nevada College is proud to announce that more than a third of its full-time students were still able to make the fall semester dean’s list.

The WNC Fall 2020 Dean’s List includes 408 students, accounting for 34.7 percent of the college’s full-time students.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory in effect for much of the region, including the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Washoe Valley areas until 10 p.m. tonight.

A winter storm will bring a round of strong and possibly damaging winds for most areas, with heavy wet snow for the Sierra late Sunday night into Tuesday morning and mostly rain down to the valley floors.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Carson City and Douglas County are again participating in a statewide Christmas tree recycling effort. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of several drop off locations.

Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases prior to recycling; if the tree is longer than six feet, cut the tree into pieces.

A winter storm has begun to move through the Carson City region Sunday bringing snow to the Sierra and snowfall to the valley floors, according to the National Weather Service.

A fast moving weather system will move across northern Nevada and the Sierra on Friday into Saturday, bringing gusty winds, prompting wind warnings and advisories for the region. The weather system will also bring periods of mountain snow and mainly light valley rain, according to the National Weather Service.

A 54-year-old Reno woman was arrested in the area of Catalpa Dr. for possession of methamphetamine and possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription after parking in a stranger’s driveway for over 20 minutes.

As part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s hazardous fuels reduction efforts, both Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts’ fire crews will conduct pile burning beginning in November 2020 through May 2021, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

A Dayton man was arrested Monday for suspicion of attempted robbery that ended with the suspect giving himself up, a Carson City sheriff's arrest report states.

It’s the annual conundrum. Is it too soon to turn off the irrigation system? With recent nights down to the teens here in Washoe Valley, we turned off the irrigation system and drained it prior to the forthcoming hard freezes. Then we turned off the outside water and drained the hose bibs too. Yet with temperatures last week back in the 60s with low to mid-30s at night, I’m sure I will have to irrigate again soon.

The Brewery Arts Center has teamed up with Carson City Toyota, Western Nevada College, and the Carson City Classic Cinema Club to present the inaugural “Made in Nevada” Film Festival, double feature drive-in movies on Oct. 30 and 31, 2020 at the Western Nevada College campus.

A traffic accident on southbound I-580 has backed up traffic for miles into Washoe Valley.

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! A vehicle towing a trailer has flipped in south Washoe Valley in the Northbound lanes on I-580 which is causing a major back up of traffic along the freeway in Carson City.

In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Nevada State Parks will have a fee-free day on Saturday filled with hikes and tours. UPDATE: Organizers say due to an overwhelming response, the apple picking has finished as there are no more apples to sell. Organizers say they will bring the picking back next year.

A 22-year-old Dayton man was arrested early Saturday morning for suspicion of third DUI drugs, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

All plants are grown and maintained at the nursery and are conditioned to survive Northern Nevada’s cold winters and hot, dry summers.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. The Carson Canyon Railbike Tours will run four times over the next three days, bringing excitement unlike any other. Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe will open two hours early beginning at 6 a.m. to ease capacity and congestion. Combined with plenty of live music, Labor Day weekend will be a thrill! UPDATE 11:07AM: Fire crews on scene have kept the fire from spreading and a helicopter has been called into help fight the fire, according to KOLO. No structures are threatened.

UPDATE 8:40AM: Resources are on scene of a single tree fire in Washoe Valley west of Bowers Mansion. The #BowersFire is a-quarter of an acre in brush and timber and was caused by lightning in the area, according to the U.S. Forest Service. No structures were threatened, fire officials said.

Western Nevada College is proud to announce that 93 students have qualified for the 2020 Summer Dean’s List.
To earn this recognition during the summer session, students attained a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and completed six units of classes or more.

Scattered showers and fast moving thunderstorms have developed Monday afternoon around Carson City, Carson Valley in Douglas County and along some portions of the Sierra front.
