Carson City coed league softball fires up Friday night with 32 teams for the spring season
The season’s first adult coed softball league play launched Friday night at Centennial Park in Carson City, with signups up considerably over the past couple of years.
According to Carson City Parks and Recreation Recreation Sports Program Supervisor Scott Chapman, 32 coed teams are on tap to play this year, up from 30 last year and 28 the previous year.
“We’re really glad to see it it fill up as it did. This is first time in a while we’ve had to this many teams and reached our cap,” said Chapman.
Coed softball action have been split this year to allow for two, 8-week seasons. The spring season brings Friday night games through June 24. There’s a break in July, and then play resumes with the second season, August through October.
In the Men’s recreation league, games begin May 2. There are 24 teams lined up to play this season. On the woman’s softball league, which also begins May 2, there are six teams.
Recreation sports has seen a big leap this year, both in areas of youth and adult signups. This year's youth basketball teams had signups just shy of 400 boys and girls. The MAC center was a big draw for the players, said Chapman, where games were split between the new sports facility and the middle school gyms.
Adult league basketball also saw plenty of action, with 18 teams playing this year, in two divisions, ages 30 and over and 18 and up. April 25 will be the adult basketball championship game.
For the first time, a high school basketball league started this year with nearly 50 students sign up, said Chapman. Meanwhile, adult volleyball and indoor and outdoor soccer all saw an increase in participants. The volleyball program that launched in September grew from 6 to 12 teams this year. And soccer or "football" also carries with it a large draw, with a total of 52 adult and youth teams signed up to play.
