Honoring the USS Nevada, State Museum presents talk by Judge Chuck Weller
It came to life in 1916, survived the attacks at Pearl Harbor and produced the first recipient of the Medal of Honor for World War II. Honoring the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, presents a lecture by Reno Judge Chuck Weller from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.
Weller’s “The Battle Born History of the USS Nevada” talk is part of the museum’s monthly Frances Humphrey Lecture Series. He will speak about all the ships that have borne that name, with particular emphasis on the battleship that saw action during World War II at Pearl Harbor, Alaska, Normandy, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
The first Medal of Honor of World War II was awarded to a crew member, and in recognition of the team’s bravery and sacrifice, the Navy named seven war ships after other members of the ship’s crew during the war. The present USS Nevada, a powerful nuclear missile submarine, will also be described.
After the war, the Nevada was used as a target among a fleet of 100 vessels to evaluate the effect of air- dropped and underwater atomic bomb detonations. Several artifacts from the WWII ship are in the museum’s collection and on display.
Chuck Weller is a district court judge in Reno. One of his hobbies is researching and writing about the state's experiences during World War II. He is the historian for the Reno Chapter of the U. S. Navy League.
Admission to the event is $8 for adults; free for museum members and ages 17 and younger. For more information, contact Robert Nylen at rnylen@nevadaculture.org or (775) 687-4810, ext. 245. The museum is at 600 N. Carson St., Carson City.
