Carson City’s Year in Review: a look back on 2020 (pandemic free edition)

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

The Blue Angels scheduled to return to Minden Tahoe Airport in 2022

MINDEN — The U.S. Navy Blue Angels have announced they will be returning to the Aviation Roundup Airshow at the Minden-Tahoe Airport for the 2022 Airshow.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

Nevada governor honors Veterans Day through proclamation, video message to Veterans

CARSON CITY — Today, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a proclamation naming Wednesday, November 11th as Veterans Day in honor of our Veterans that have served in our nation’s military. State offices will be closed for this official holiday.

Retailers in Nevada and throughout the United States are ramping up hiring campaigns for the all-important holiday shopping season. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates retailers will boost hiring by 4,700 positions during the holiday shopping period.

Celebration of Life for Carson City mayor Robert 'Bob' Crowell to be live-streamed due to COVID concerns

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

Obituary: Lynn Doyal

Lynn Doyal, 73, passed away October 14, 2020, with his wife Janis by his side at their home. Lynn was born in Turlock, California on May 8, 1947 to Jack and Elyse Doyal. He lived most of his life in Alpine County, California.

Carson City MAC, Sierra Room suggested to be renamed in honor of the late Mayor Bob Crowell

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission discussed renaming the MAC and the Community Center’s Sierra Room in honor of the late Mayor Bob Crowell during their meeting Monday.

Verne R. Horton of Carson City, Nevada passed away at his residence on October 19, 2020. He was born February 1, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA and is survived by loving and devoted wife of 23 years, Brenda; sons Sean and Scott, daughter Debra, 5 grandchildren and brother, Jim Horton.

Carson City Mayor Robert 'Bob' Crowell dies

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum in Carson City to reopen Monday

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum will reopen to the public on Monday, July 20, thanks to a generous donation from the family of a former Stewart Indian School principal. Opened in January and closed to the public in March because of the current health crisis, the Cultural Center faced severe budget cuts.
