School board to consider resolution opposing Sandoval plan to take emergency repair funds
The Carson City School District board tonight will take up proposed traditional and non-traditional calendars for next year, as well as consider a resolution that would oppose Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's plan to take debt service from school district emergency repair funds.
The governor's proposal would take about $319 million from the state's school district debt service reserve funds used for emergencies and instead apply the money to operational expenses in to individual districts. Critics say the plan would, among other things, make it difficult for schools to fix leaky roofs and boilers.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City School District, 851 E. William Street. Click here for the agenda and here to watch the meeting live.
Meanwhile, board members will hear a presentation on the school calendar.
The calendar, as proposed, would remain the same as this year, with the school year ending for students on May 31 and resuming again on Aug. 22. Meanwhile, Clark and Washoe counties are considering new calendars for next year.
Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said the district will likely need about a year, in the meantime, before a new calendar would be introduced.
