Petco Foundation Invests in Pets of the Homeless’ service and therapy animals
Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based, national organization has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its emergency veterinary care program to service and therapy animals that belong to the homeless.
Pets of the Homeless, which made the announcement Thursday, is a nonprofit national organization focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless, thus relieve the anguish and anxiety of the homeless who cannot provide for their pets.
This grant will be restricted to service and therapy animals of the homeless.
Since 2008, Pets of the Homeless has created a nationwide network of more than 440-plus pet food donation sites and 440-plus pet food providers such as food banks, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. These partners have distributed more than 473 tons of pet food with an estimated fair market value of more than $1.93 million. Pets of the Homeless has provided veterinary treatment to more than 15,300 pets across the United States at a cost of over $470,000.
The grant was made possible through the Petco Foundation’s annual Helping Heroes fundraising campaign, in partnership with Natural Balance Pet Foods. During the campaign each October, customers are invited to donate in Petco stores across the country to support service and therapy animals and organizations.
The Petco Foundation investment will help to support its emergency veterinary care program to service and therapy animals that belong to the homeless whom do not have the resources when an animal is ill or injured.
“The PetCo Foundation grant will relieve the anguish and anxiety of the homeless who cannot provide for their service and therapy pets. These pets offer a healing power which is very important in the lives of many homeless,” said Genevieve Frederick, Founder.
