Senator Square: Students from Denmark visit CHS

On February 13, through CHS’ leadership class led by teacher and advisor Ann Britt, we had the privilege of having students from Efterskolen Frydensberg, a Danish boarding school, come to CHS as a part of an annual 10th grade trip to America.

This is the third year we have been able to coordinate with this school to have Carson High as a stop on their trip.

They showed up to school at 7:45 a.m., and student council members were paired up with Danish students to guide them around the school as well as have them attend their classes.

We played games and got to know one another throughout the day. Everyone had a fun and exciting time making new friends and learning about different cultures.

It was interesting to see the visiting students’ reactions to the many things that we see as normal around here. One student, when shown the CHS Athletic Complex, described it as, “Everything that we’ve seen in American movies!”

Efterskolen Frydensberg has only 150 students total, so being exposed to a high school environment with roughly 2,400 students was quite overwhelming for them.

This was definitely a memorable experience for everyone. These Danish students have not only visited CHS over the past couple of years, they also enjoy their visits with their connections in Sacramento.

We hope to continue this fellowship between schools for many years to come!

Annual CHS Talent Show

The annual CHS Talent Show, held Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, showcased an amazing group of students with amazing singing, dancing, and instrumental abilities.

The event, sponsored by Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), is a fundraiser to help offset the cost of state and national competitions for its members. A special thanks goes out to New Entrepreneurs Network of Hop and Mae Adams Foundation who donated the prize money for the contestants.

Students performed sixteen acts at the community center, and although all student participants showed exceptional talent, only five monetary prizes were awarded.

The winners of the CHS 2017 Talent Show are as follows:

The Grand Prize-Best of Show and $125 went to Chandler Blueberg singing her rendition of "Benny and the Jets" by Elton John.

First Place non-singing award and $75 was given to Wyatt Law for his original piece on the electric guitar. Second Place non-singing award and $50 went to the band Cygnus for their original song "Anthem of Sorrow" made up of members Joey Calderon, Jacob Richetta, Max Deeb, Tobi Arreola, and Adelynn Puett.

First Place singing award and $75 was given to ‘Young Maserati,’ Alan Rodriguez, for his original rap song, "Live Forever." Second Place singing award and $50 went to Juliet Favero and Jacob Wolz for her original piece, "Rebel Hearts."

A huge thanks goes out to all participants, the audience, and the raffle prize donors for making the show a huge success.

Prizes and donors included: Two $50 Visa Gift Cards donated by Garrett Lepire, Realtor for Century 21, Jim Wilson Realty; a one-hour massage with Bryana Fitch at Carson Massage and Wellness (value $70); $35 Gift Card to Café at Adele’s donated by Charlie Abowd; $25 Gift Card to Friends in Service Helping (FISH); assorted Senator clothing donated by Graphics Factory; Dutch Bros. gift pack (one pound of coffee with two mugs); family pack of tickets to “Into the Woods” donated by Youth Theater Carson City; four tickets to any Wild Horse Theater Performance donated by Wild Horse Productions; 30-pack assorted Skittles and Starburst; and 30-pack assorted chocolate candy bars donated by NAI Alliance.

Students are randomly selected each month from a list of students who have perfect attendance, and each student is awarded a certificate and a gift certificate for the student store.

Sign Me a Song

Sign Me a Song Night happens at CHS Feb. 23 in the library at 6 p.m. American Sign Language II students will be sharing songs in sign language.

Speech and Debate

Speech and debate Captain Sawyer Barnett competed in the state level of the American Legion last week on the topic of duties of a citizen under the Constitution, and placed second.

The team hosts the final league tournament Feb. 24 and 25. Many volunteers have stepped forward to help with this event, but speech and debate can always use more. Anyone interested in helping with this event may contact the coach, Patrick Mobley, at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us.

Student of the Week

Karla Torres is a dedicated student here at CHS. She is also this week’s student of the week.

Karla is always positive and has a great personality. Torres makes her contribution to the high school by always being on time and studying hard to get good grades. She does more than her part through helping others and being responsible.

CHS is grateful for all Karla Torres has done to make this high school the greatest in the land.

Senior Spotlight

This week’s senior in the spotlight is the soft spoken, yet exceedingly friendly and generous Miles Bean.

He has an exceptional weighted GPA of 4.07 with its cumulative partner being a high 3.22. Miles’ senior courses include: Advanced Placement English Literature, AP Government, AP Calculus BC (calculus I and II), AP Enrichment, Emergency Medical Technician, and Psychology.

After high school, Miles is planning to attend college, with BYU being his first choice. He will be majoring in biology because he would like to go into the field of medicine, with an emphasis in podiatry.

His myriad extra-curricular activities include: Carson High School Varsity Track and Cross Country. Outside of school, Miles works at the Carson Aquatic Facility where his favorite part of the job is giving swim lessons to the little ones.
