Carson City School District taking next steps toward new five-year strategic plan
A new five-year strategic plan for the Carson City School District (CCSD) is entering its final phases of development prior to being adopted for another five-year implementation period.
District Superintendent Richard Stokes said the next steps in the process to refresh the CCSD Strategic Plan begin with a Board of Trustees workshop held at 6 p.m. following the Feb. 28 board meeting.
Both the School Board of Trustees and the public will give final input on the plan at the workshop, he said.
Then on Wednesday, March 8 the district has scheduled a Professional Learning Community (PLC) meeting inside the Carson High School Library from 6-7:30 p.m., Stokes said.
"At this meeting, citizens, school personnel, and students are invited to begin working to achieve the Goals, Objectives, and Strategies of the Strategic Plan," he said. "During our Community PLCs, citizens, students, and staff will provide input and suggestions on how to accomplish the Objectives and Strategies."
Those three items were updated in a draft developed from a series of public meetings held in the fall to gather input and feedback on refreshing the current five-year strategic plan, Stokes said.
"The resulting draft includes a slight change to our District's Vision Statement," he said.
A refreshed strategic plan draft now reads "Our Community Inspires and Empowers, Innovators, Leaders, and Thinkers," Stokes said.
The plan's Beliefs and Values statements were also modified to meet seven primary objectives.
Those include that (1) every student must have the opportunity to excel and be prepared for success in post-secondary education or a chosen career; (2) every student must continue to learn beyond school hours; (3) the measure of success must extend beyond standardized tests to students who are life-long learners; (4) students, families, schools, businesses, and the community must work in partnership to pursue academic excellence and civic involvement; (5) students must be empowered to achieve a lifestyle that is physically and emotionally healthy and socially responsible; (6) we must recruit, empower, and retain the most effective educators and staff; and (7) to move our community and our nation forward, students must receive a world class education.
Changes were further made to the strategic plan's five main goals, Stokes said.
Those include the recruitment, growth and retention of exceptional staff; design curriculum of multiple pathways that empower lifelong learners, active citizens, and career and college ready students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12; engage parents and families by empowering and inspiring them to positively impact their child's education in a welcoming, informative, and collaborative school culture; advance physical, social, and emotional wellness to foster healthy generations of Carson City students; and actively connect every student with learning beyond the classroom to create a community in full partnership.
"The District's Strategic Plan is a specific road map for decision making," Stokes said. "Having this direction from our patrons and Trustees keeps us focused on what the Community wants in its educational system."
Carson City's current strategic plan, titled "Empower Carson City 2017," was last updated in 2012 when it was put into effect.
