Carson City arrest log: Man jailed after physically, mentally abusing elderly mother
A 62-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of gross misdemeanor elder abuse and domestic battery after authorities learned he had been physically, mentally and financially abusive to his 82-year-old mother, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the 2700 block of South Carson Street at 4:21 p.m. in reference to a domestic battery.
Deputies met with the victim, who had “a decent size” red mark with some bruising on here right cheek bone. She explained she was living in a room with her son who has been verbally and physically abusive with her on a daily basis, often yelling at her and calling her foul names.
The victim told deputies her son is usually drunk and keeps her “prisoner” in the room and she is not allowed to leave or call family or friends, the arrest report states. She said her son controls her finances and does’t allow her access to her own money.
In Sunday’s most recent incident, the victim told deputies that her son grabbed her by the shirt with both hands and shoved her toward the bed. While she was falling, she said she hit her face on the corner of the bed that left a mark. She explained her son is six feet two inches and nearly 200 pounds and that she is 5 foot six and 150 pounds. She said she is no match with her son when he becomes physical and has no means to escape, the arrest report states.
The victim said her daughter came to the room to check on her and she told her what her son was doing to her. The mother advised she wanted to leave with her daughter but if she did, her son would relinquish her ID card, bank card, Social Security card and financial papers. The daughter called 911 for help, the arrest report states.
Officers met with the suspect inside his room. He was clearly intoxicated and extremely gruff and surly, calling the deputies names, cursing and was uncooperative. He denied physically abusing his mother.
He was asked how she sustained the injury to her face. The man replied that she fell often due to age and that she has Alzheimer’s. He claimed his sister was trying to control his mother and had stolen money from her although he could not prove any details. He refused to give up his mother’s ID and belongings, claiming he had to be in charge of her finances because she was unable.
During the interview of the victim and the daughter, officers learned the victim had not been officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The officer noted that during his conversation with victim it was clear that she was very aware of what was going on and was troubled over her son going to jail but said she wasn’t going to lie about what he was doing to her, the arrest report states.
The daughter advised that her brother had abused their mother, similarly, several months ago and that she reported him to Nevada Aging Services. She advised her mother was assigned a case worker although they had not seen her for some time.
Deputies arrested the man on suspicion of domestic battery of a victim over 65 years of age. He blew a preliminary breath test of .160. After further review the man was also charged with suspicion of elder abuse because of the mental abuse, isolation, confinement and financial exploitation, the arrest report states. Bail: $10,137.
