Kids Fishing Day at Carson City’s New Urban Fishing Pond
Carson City's newest recreation feature will be dedicated on Oct. 23, along with a Fishing Day, highlighting the opening of the one-acre Urban Fishing Pond.
The event, which runs from 7 a.m. to noon at the Carson City Fairgrounds at 601 Old Clear Creek Road, is free to the public. Sponsors include the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Carson City Host Lions Club, and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department.
The event is designed to allow families to bring children to fish in the new pond and introduce them to this great outdoor recreational activity, organizers say. Registration begins at 7 a.m. continues throughout the morning. There will be raffle prizes for the kids and lots of fun.
For families without fishing equipment, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has a limited amount of fishing poles and tackle available for use during the event. Volunteers including the Carson City Host Lions Club members will be available all morning to bait hooks, rig tackle, teach basic fishing techniques, shoreline safety, and assist children with their first time fishing. Children under the age of 12 years old can fish for free. Children 12 years and above are required to have a current Nevada Fishing License with a trout stamp.
There will be a pond dedication ceremony at 9 a.m. at the entrance to the pond. This ceremony will recognize the public/private partnerships with various grant funding organizations, community partners, and private donors that made this project possible.
Along with the events noted above, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension - Carson City/ Storey County 4-H Council will sponsor a Pumpkin Patch at Fuji Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event will be a fund raiser for the Council and will include games, petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkins, prizes, and a costume parade. Please bring the entire family out to the Carson City Fairgrounds and Fuji Park for a great day of family fun.
For more information on the event, please contact Vern L. Krahn, Park Planner, at the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department at (775) 887-2262, Extension 7343, or e-mail him at VKrahn@carson.org
