Cold conditions expected through Sunday for Carson City area

Though not bone-chilling compared to what’s going on east of the rockies and in the upper midwest, western Nevada will experience cold weather of its own over the next couple days.

A low front diving south will lead to unseasonably cold temperatures through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Some valleys will have low temperatures overnight in the teens or single digits.

Nevada Day weekend forecast: Rain in Carson City, snow at Lake Tahoe through Saturday

You may want to outfit your kids with jackets and ponchos tonight for trick or treating in Carson City as rain will move into the valley by early evening, and stay through much of Saturday making for a wet Nevada Day Parade, forecasters say.

Cooperative Extension offers ‘Agriculture in Times of Drought’ workshops

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering workshops Nov. 17 – 20 in Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon and Lovelock for Nevada agricultural producers to help them plan for the possibilities of a fourth year of drought. “Agriculture in Times of Drought,” will give farmers and ranchers information on how to be resilient to variable weather in Nevada.

Return of cold weather, snow over weekend kicks off snowmaking at Heavenly resort

Cold weather and 2 inches of new snow fell at Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe over the weekend, allowing for snow making machines to kick on for the season in anticipation of a Nov. 21 opening day, officials said Monday.

The snowmaking system, known as the west coast's largest, ran for seven hours night Sunday, blowing snow at the top of the Gondola, as well as on California Trail, Orion and Tamarack return.

Overnight freezing temps into Monday, possible winter storm this weekend

UPDATE: The National Weather Service warns of potential freezing temperatures again tonight through Tuesday morning for the Carson City area and western Nevada region. And as an added bonus, the likelihood of the fall season's first significant snow event at Lake Tahoe beginning Friday.

Strong gusty winds today prompt Red Flag Warning, Wind Advisory

Low pressure moving across the Pacific Northwest will push a cold front across the eastern Sierra and western Nevada today prompting a Red Flag Warning and a Wind Advisory for the Carson City area.

Winds will increase this morning and continue through the afternoon, and slowly diminish by evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Winds will be from the south to southwest, 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Locally stronger gusts up to 65 mph is expected in wind prone areas.

Gusty winds may whip up dust around Carson City into tonight

Low pressure will move through northern California and northwest Nevada Monday, producing gusty winds and hazardous boating conditions for Lake Tahoe and Pyramid, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect.

In addition to the winds, the best chance for rain and high elevation snow is north of Interstate 80 from Monday afternoon to early Tuesday morning. Rainfall amounts up to 0.50 inch are possible in Lassen and Plumas counties, with less than 0.10 inch elsewhere.

High winds with Tuesday cold front prompt Red Flag Warning across western Nevada

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Carson City and across Western Nevada as strong winds are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Wind gusts in the valleys are expected to be 45-55 mph with gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas while the Sierra ridges could gust to 100 mph.

Fire Weather Watch: Expect brisk, windy conditions Tuesday

UPDATE: A brief warmup Monday will be followed by windy conditions Tuesday prompting a Fire Weather Watch, according to the National Weather Service.

Northern Nevada gets prime view of 'Blood Moon' eclipse early Wednesday morning

A total lunar eclipse will be viewable early Wednesday morning across all of Nevada and California, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The eclipse will occur from 2:15 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. with peak viewing of the total eclipse roughly from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Mostly clear conditions expected. Bring a jacket.

Weather Service: Snow in the Sierra and rain in Western Nevada through Sunday

Three to six inches of snow fell overnight in the Sierra above 8,000 feet, while rain shower totals in some areas of western Nevada were over an inch, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Windy conditions and showers should keep smoke out of Carson City area

A band of rain showers is moving through northern California and approaching the King Fire Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Some light rain and higher humidity will likely decrease fire activity, meaning much less smoke, if any, will pass east of the Sierra Crest.

Dense Smoke Advisory extended, Carson Tahoe prepares for 'Hazardous' smoke conditions

With the Dense Smoke Advisory for the region being extended through Tuesday night, Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center is taking proactive steps to prepare and protect patients in response to the heavy smoke conditions in our area from the King Fire. Air quality is expected to remain moderate to poor for the next several days throughout the Carson City region.

Carson City area can expect thick smoke from King Fire this week

UPDATE: A Dense Smoke Advisory has been extended until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Carson City, Dayton, Carson Valley, Reno and Lake Tahoe areas, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Depending on the amount of smoke, it could be further extended. As of 7:25 p.m. Monday the King Fire has burned 87,592 acres and is 18 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

A dense smoke advisory is issued when smoke from wildfires significantly reduces visibilities making it difficult to see and breath. The smoke will continue to be a problem until the fires are extinguished, according to the weather service. Those in the advisory areas are urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the smoke and to stay indoors.

King Fire grows as Weather Service issues Dense Smoke Advisory for Carson City region through Monday

A Dense Smoke Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for Carson City, Dayton, Carson Valley and Reno areas through 5 p.m. Monday.

Rain possible overnight followed by midweek warmup and cooler weather Thursday

Low pressure in Central California will lift into the region Saturday night into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The front will likely bring showers and thunderstorms to the region with moderate rainfall. A band of rain is likely to develop along the Interstate 80 corridor from Lake Tahoe to Winnemucca overnight into Sunday morning. How much rain in the Carson City region, if any, is uncertain.

Wind shift keeps King Fire smoke away from Carson City

The King Fire, which started a week ago, Sept. 13, has now burned nearly 81,000 acres east of Pollock Pines in El Dorado County. As of Saturday morning, the human-caused fire is 10 percent contained.

King Fire slows Thursday; Man faces arson charges, $10 million bail; Lake Tahoe open

UPDATE FRIDAY 9AM: Highway 50 reopened Friday morning. Expect delays and partial lane closures. Westbound traffic is reduced to 1 lane from Riverton to Pollock Pines.

UPDATE: The King Fire was much less active Thursday and firefighters were able to gain control on the southwestern end of the fire near Pollock Pines. The fire is 10 percent contained as of Thursday night and has consumed 73,124 acres, Cal Fire officials said.

According to a Cal Fire public information officer the northernmost 'finger' of fire is around the west side of Hellhole Reservoir, headed to Chipmunk Ridge. There was structure protection preparation work at Hellhole Reservoir.

Smoke levels continue to plague western Nevada, particularly Carson City and Reno but the forecast calls for winds to change direction some and drive the smoke away, according a National Weather Service forecast discussion briefing issued Thursday night.

Weather Service: Smoke to get worse through Thursday

The National Weather Service in Reno has provided this image which shows the probable areas of smoke through Friday based on forecast wind information and assuming the King Fire remains active.

Southwest winds will keep the smoke area in the general same area through Wednesday. Winds will turn more westerly behind a cold front on Thursday and push smoke more into western Nevada.

Breezy conditions through Wednesday with smoke from California fires possible

Low pressure nearing the California coast will continue to produce gusty winds across the Sierra and western Nevada Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Peak gusts by Wednesday could reach 40 mph with stronger gusts in wind prone areas. Boaters on Lake Tahoe should use caution Tuesday and consider staying off the lake Wednesday. Travel may also be restricted along Interstate 80 and Highway 395 for high profile vehicles.
