Nevada Day weekend forecast: Rain in Carson City, snow at Lake Tahoe through Saturday
You may want to outfit your kids with jackets and ponchos tonight for trick or treating in Carson City as rain will move into the valley by early evening, and stay through much of Saturday making for a wet Nevada Day Parade, forecasters say.
“We’re looking for rain making its way into the Carson City area around 6 or 7. It won’t be a huge amount. Heavier rain will begin after midnight,” said Mark Faucette, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno. Temperatures in the capital city will be in the low 50s to high 40s tonight.
If parents want to avoid the rain, there is the annual Safe Night Trick or Treat at the Carson Mall from 2 to 6 p.m. It is early, indoors and there's plenty of goodies for the kids.
The weather system, which will affect the Lake Tahoe area with up to a foot of snow expected in the higher elevations, will bring rain to the valleys, and possibly some snow flakes into Carson City early Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon when temperatures drop, said Faucette.
Expect a wet, rainy Saturday through the duration of the Nevada Day Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. with the rain tapering to showers by afternoon as the weather system moves through, said Faucette. Daytime highs Saturday will be in the mid 40s, or about 20 degrees cooler than Friday’s daytime high.
Saturday morning lows will be in the 30s to low 40s, and “snow isn’t out of the question,” he said for the Carson City area. However he noted that as Saturday progresses and the bulk of the storm system moves out, it will take a lot of the moisture with it. After all is said and done, the system could produce about 1/2-inch of rain in the valleys, he said. So it's a good idea to bring bring umbrellas and outfit yourselves with rainwear and ponchos.
Go here for a list of places along the parade route where you can warm up with food, refreshments and adult beverages.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the weather service for Lake Tahoe and Sierra, with anywhere from 3 to 5 inches expected at lake level and up to 12 inches above 7,500 feet, possibly more on the west side of the Sierra, he said.
