Fire Weather Watch: Expect brisk, windy conditions Tuesday
UPDATE: A brief warmup Monday will be followed by windy conditions Tuesday prompting a Fire Weather Watch, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong winds are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of a strong cold front moving into the region. Wind gusts in the valleys are expected to be 40-55 mph with gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas while the Sierra Ridges could gust near 100 mph. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity will create critical fire weather conditions, according to the weather service.
Potential impacts from this wind event include strong cross winds with travel restrictions possible for high profile vehicles.
Low visibility due to blowing dust will also be possible across western Nevada along with fire weather concerns as the winds combine with low afternoon humidity. Dangerous boating conditions are likely across Pyramid Lake and Lake Tahoe while aviation concerns include the strong winds along with turbulence and some wind shear due to mountain wave effects.
As for precipitation, light rain may reach far western Nevada Tuesday night with some snow showers in the mountains.
Here at home, as we always note when those gusty winds start to howl in Carson City: Bring in the small dogs and secure the lawn furniture.
