Overnight freezing temps into Monday, possible winter storm this weekend
UPDATE: The National Weather Service warns of potential freezing temperatures again tonight through Tuesday morning for the Carson City area and western Nevada region. And as an added bonus, the likelihood of the fall season's first significant snow event at Lake Tahoe beginning Friday.
The best chances for a hard freeze for all valleys will be overnight tonight and Tuesday morning as a ridge strengthens overhead, according to the weather service. There will be an increased risk of damage to any vegetation still outside, as well as possible damage to exposed pipes and sprinkler systems. So with that said, it's best to drain the pipes and bring in the tomato plants.
Valley high temperatures will likely remain below average for the next couple of days before the next system rolls in, and this one may be in time for Nevada Day festivities in Carson City.
There's potential for the first winter storm at Lake Tahoe and Sierra, arriving Friday into Saturday. The National Weather Service in Reno said Monday that the first significant snow event of the fall season for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra could happen beginning Friday.
Confidence continues to increase on the first decent storm of the season arriving this weekend. It appears the brunt of it will arrive during the afternoon and evening Friday, making it a potentially wet, windy and snowy Halloween. Right now forecasters say there's a good chance that a foot of snow is possible in the higher elevations of the Sierra, with snow levels starting around 7,000 to 7,000 feet and then lowering with the temperatures to 4,500 feet by Saturday morning.
