Thunderstorms expected this evening through Carson City region

Thunderstorms, some possibly quite heavy, are expected through at least 6 tonight in Carson City and Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms will continue to develop late this afternoon from Reno south, producing moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds to 45 mph.

Travelers along Interstate 80, 580, and Highway 50, Highway 395, and State Route 431 and 341 may be impacted by heavy rain and gusty winds, according to the weather service.

Thunderstorms possible through the afternoon and early evening

UPDATE: Thunderstorms were developing this afternoon east of Dayton and north of Virginia City toward Reno, according to the National Weather Service.

At 4:05 p.m. the weather service issued a flash flood warning for north central Storey County and south central Washoe County. The storm was said to be producing torrential rainfall of three inches ore more in one hour, according to a weather service bulletin. The storm was located south of Interstate 80 near USA Parkway.

Heat continues with a chance of thunderstorms

Hot weather and near-record temperatures will continue in Western Nevada and the Sierra this week, as a ridge of high pressure settles over the region early this week.

Some areas in western Nevada will reach triple digits again with many areas in the Sierra reaching the upper 80's to lower 90's. Carson City is forecast Sunday to reach 97 and 101 on Monday, with Tuesday around 99, according to the National Weather Service.

The area extends from the greater Lake Tahoe area, Carson City, western Nevada Sierra front, from Mineral and Southern Lyon counties and runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Red Flag Warning Issued; Firefighters Prepare

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Monday. That warning indicates a high fire danger on the western Nevada Sierra front, including Carson City.

An upper level disturbance will move across the region today. This will bring isolated thunderstorms this afternoon initially along the Sierra Front and far northwest Nevada with activity moving quickly to the east across the basin and range during the evening. Some of these thunderstorms may produce dry lightning.

Camelopardalids meteor shower viewing tonight over Nevada and California skies

Step outside and take a look at the skies tonight and early Saturday morning for a meteor shower that hasn't happened before. Scientists are calling it the Camelopardalids. No one has seen it before, but the shower could put on a show that could rival the prolific Perseid meteor shower in August.

The Camelopardalids shower is dust resulting from a periodic comet, 209P/LINEAR, according to NASA.

Weather Service issues rare dust storm warning for Carson City region

A dangerous dust storm has been reported moving toward the Carson City area tonight. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a dust storm warning through 10 p.m. for the Carson City region from Highway 50 north to Interstate 80.

A wall of blowing dust is moving westward through the I-80 and Highway 50 corridors toward Reno and Carson City, according to the weather service. Winds associated with the system are blowing east 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Visibility associated with the system is down to zero at times.

A late season storm will bring windy conditions with periods of rain in Carson City and snow at Lake Tahoe through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers will develop Monday night north of Susanville and then drop south into Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley at around sunrise Tuesday and then further south into Mono County.
