Nevada Performance Academy will be adding another dimension to their program by offering workshops to give kids the chance to meet professionals in other fields of interest such as medicine, engineering, accounting and more.

Parents interested in enrollment or seeking information are being asked to attend an informative meeting on Aug. 11 and again Aug. 12, 6:15 p.m. at VT Williams and Associates, 3470 G.S. Richards Blvd., Carson City.

Nevadans only have a few more days to cast their vote for the final Sesquicentennial medallion. On Wednesday, July 23 the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invited all Nevadans to participate in choosing the design for the fourth Sesquicentennial Commemorative Medallion. Voting ends this Thursday, Aug. 7.

Since 2009, Western Nevada College has actively sought ways to be sustainable in the operation of its campuses. Through continuing efforts and a commitment to use green energy, that vision is rising to new heights.

Black Rock Solar, a nonprofit corporation in Reno that specializes in expanding the use of renewable energy, just completed installation of 666 panels atop the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City campus. At 180 kilowatts, the project is Black Rock’s largest roof array to date.

The fourth graders worked at the computer screens for hours, fingers dancing over the keyboard and figures on the screen spinning, growing and changing colors. And, their parents were happy. The students weren’t playing games; they were designing and building things like a whistle, buildings, hot air balloon, cars, DNA models, bracelets, airplanes and more, using a 3-D modeling and CAD design program.

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health launched two new Nevada-specific websites Tuesday to help schools protect students from sexual assaults on college campuses.

The websites, www.preventsexualviolenceNV.org and www.stepupstopviolence.org, define sexual assault and consent and offer approaches for individuals, students, and community members to safely intervene when observing a potentially high-risk situation.

As July closes so does Nevada Department of Wildlife's month-long BEAR Logic campaign, designed to teach residents and visitors how to live and recreate in bear county. This week NDOW advice provides tips if people should have a bear encounter.

Keep in mind that bears exhibit stress behaviors that indicate their anxiety and preference to avoid conflict with you. These are not necessarily signs of an aggressive bear.

— Moaning and woofing while avoiding direct eye contact with you.
— Clacking of their teeth and smacking of their jaws.

The Carson City Library has joined the Salvation Army’s Carson City Corps Community Center in preparing students for the upcoming school year. The Back-To-School supply drive will run through August 11. A collection barrel and Apple Tree Poster is located at the library’s main Help Desk.

In honor of Nevada’s 150th birthday, the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invites all Nevadans to participate in choosing the design for the fourth Sesquicentennial commemorative medallion.

This medallion, the final in the series of four being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design voted on by Nevadans. Voting begins today, Wednesday, July 23, which marks 100 days until Nevada Day, and ends Thursday, August 7, 2014.

July is BEAR Logic Month, a time to teach residents and visitors how to live and recreate in bear county. When a bear in its own habitat is exhibiting normal bear behavior, it’s unlikely to be a cause for concern. NDOW cautions people to never to approach or attempt an interaction with a bear. Of course the best option is to never have a bear encounter in the first place.

The Nevada Performance Academy plans to open this fall despite the passing of founder and former Nevada state superintendent, Gene Paslov who died June 8, 2014 at the age of 80.

The academy currently has 70 applications and is seeking to enroll another 50 students grades 7 through 12 who want to be a part of an innovative school that will work towards a student’s academic success as well as cater to their talents and special interests. The school is located at 1600 Snyder Avenue in Carson City.

Carson City firefighters have a new tool to teach fire safety. "Fire Safety Day," an easy-to-read children's book, follows Owen as he comes home to tell his mom what he learned in school that day.

The book will be featured during two Storytime sessions at the Carson City Library beginning at 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on July 24.

Parents and children can simply show up at the library for Storytime and get a free copy of the new book in English or Spanish.

Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce our upcoming production of SEUSSICAL, JR., an exciting adventure through the world of Dr. Seuss. The show will run two weekends, July 25 – August 3, 2014 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center. SEUSSICAL, JR. is great fun for the whole family. The Carson City Symphony's "Strings in the Summer" orchestra and beginning fiddle class, directed by Sue Jesch, will present its Summer String Concert of traditional American fiddle tunes on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Sierra Place Senior Living, 1111 West College Parkway, Carson City. June 28, 2014 was a gala day for many of our most disadvantaged families, as 42 adults from the ESL in-home Program of Northern Nevada, a no-cost-to-student program, were presented with certificates of achievement in English language and literacy. The program also tutors GED preparation and Citizenship Study at no cost.
