Carson High Teacher Found Dead in Arizona
Submitted by editor on Wed, 04/23/2014 - 7:58amThe Carson City High School community is mourning the loss of one of their teachers, Debbie Elder. Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office told KRNV that Elder died in Arizona on Saturday. The Mesa Police Department said her death appears to be a suicide.
Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said Mrs. Elder was a 24-year teacher of the school district, teaching math at Carson High School and before that, Carson Middle School.
Pizza Factory Helps Eagle Valley Middle School on Thursday

Thursday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the generous owners of Pizza Factory 3120 Hwy. 50 E., #3, will donate 20 percent of the entire day's earnings to the EVMS parent teacher organization.
The donation will help with purchase CRT testing snacks for the entire student body. The community is asked to come in, call in or carry out pizza, sandwiches or pasta and help raise funds for Eagle Valley Middle School.

Law enforcement agencies warn of telephone scam targeting grandparents
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/21/2014 - 4:17pmThe Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam involving grandparents of college-aged students. The scammers recently bilked a Douglas County couple of $4,000, said Sgt. Pat Brooks. In Carson City, people have been targeted in the past with a similar scam.
The way the scam works is a caller phones a relative, usually a grandparent, and informs them their grandchild has gotten into trouble with the law while on spring break. In the most recent case, the grandchild was said to be in trouble with the law in Nashville, Tenn.

NEA announces $768,500 in arts funding for Nevada

The NAC was awarded $663,500 for the third year of its Partnership Agreement Grant, which supports the agency’s programs, outreach activities and various grant categories.

There will be 30 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

Dayton Students to Stage 'Romeo & Juliet'

Open to the public, the play is under the direction of drama teacher Michelle Crain, assisted by her husband Cameron Crain. The school's seventh- and eighth-grade students perform this timeless classic about young and tragic love. Cost to attend is $5 per person.

Nevada elementary students invited to choose third Sesquicentennial medallion design

The medallion, third of four in the Sesquicentennial series being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design elements as chosen by Nevada students. Votes must be submitted to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki’s office no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

UNR announces plan to go tobacco-free in 2015

This action has been endorsed through resolutions of support by the UNR Faculty Senate, Staff Employees Council, Graduate Student Association and Associated Students of the University of Nevada. The University will join nearly 1,200 other U.S. colleges and universities that have implemented a tobacco-free policy.

Thirty years ago, after completing their medical residencies, Schwenk and a partner opened an office in a small northern Utah town. They were the only physicians in a large area, the closest hospital was an hour away, and even helicopter transport took time to arrange.
