Enrollment underway for Nevada Performance Academy, fall opening in the works
The Nevada Performance Academy plans to open this fall despite the passing of founder and former Nevada state superintendent, Gene Paslov who died June 8, 2014 at the age of 80.
The academy currently has 70 applications and is seeking to enroll another 50 students grades 7 through 12 who want to be a part of an innovative school that will work towards a student’s academic success as well as cater to their talents and special interests. The school is located at 1600 Snyder Avenue in Carson City.
“I think people may be under the assumption that a Charter school is for kids in trouble which has nothing to do with what Charter means," said Colleen Bannister, in charge of enrollment for the school. "Charter schools are actually held accountable for how well they educate children."
The structure of the Nevada Performance Academy is about teaching kids how to think and be independent.
"Parent’s who want to give their children the edge in life and in their future careers should be banging down our door,” she said.
These students will be enrolled tuition free and are not required to participate or have training in the arts, although the school will be offering dance, theatre, music, and digital and visual arts in addition to the core academic curriculum.
Students will customize their schedules based on a variety of components including online classes, small classes on campus, and even classes at Western Nevada College that will provide college credits as well.
