Nevada Public Health launches websites to combat sexual violence

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health launched two new Nevada-specific websites Tuesday to help schools protect students from sexual assaults on college campuses.
The websites, www.preventsexualviolenceNV.org and www.stepupstopviolence.org, define sexual assault and consent and offer approaches for individuals, students, and community members to safely intervene when observing a potentially high-risk situation.
The creation of these websites coincide with recommendations in a recent White House Task Force report "Not Alone" which address a national problem of sexual assault on college campuses. Over the past two years, the DPBH's Rape Prevention and Education Program spearheaded the development of the websites to provide education and resources for teens and young adults experiencing relationship abuse.
One in five women report being sexually assaulted in college, most often by someone she knows, and usually the incident goes unreported (White House Task Force, April 2014). Many survivors are left feeling isolated, ashamed, or blaming themselves. Men too, are victims of these crimes.
Federal Title IX Education Amendments require all schools receiving federal financial assistance to protect students from sexual harassment, and recommend colleges and universities implement preventative educational programs on college campuses.
New steps outlined in www.NotAlone.gov include campus climate surveys, community partnerships, policy changes, and a campus-wide approach to reduce sexual violence.
The RPE Program receives funds through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to advance primary sexual violence prevention efforts at the national, state, and local level. Over 125 colleges and university campuses are affiliated with RPE programs across the United States.
