I hope everyone is feeling okay this morning; lots of fun was had throughout town yesterday. Please be aware that schoolchildren are celebrating Nevada Moves Day today, and there will be several little ones walking or biking to school.

Enjoy a nice dinner tonight, complete with live music, if you head to Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, Glen Eagles, or Living the Good Life. The Carson City Symphony is looking for bassoons, French horns, and violas to join them at rehearsals tonight.

If you consider yourself adventurous, then the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry in Virginia City is for you. It’s not nicknamed the Testicle Festival for nothing! If you need some liquid courage, take part in the Ball Breaker Saloon Crawl. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade heads down C Street at noon.

The middle of the week, and if you’re like me, you are still adjusting to the time change. Get the blood pumping with some live music. Head to Sassafras for a Jazz Jam headed by Tom Miller, or maybe to Living the Good Life where Mick and Lynne will entertain you. Cowboy boots are not required if you want to get in on the country line dance lessons at Carson Lanes. If you’re a musician, the Carson City Symphony is looking for violinists and French horn players to join them at their rehearsals.

National Grammar Day is celebrated across the United States each year on March 4, as established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. I've attached a Weird Al Yankovic song that I believe best pokes fun at the sentiments of the day.

Keep up the snowy thoughts, Carson City. We desperately need the water, the ski resorts need visitors, and those mountains are so much prettier with a blanket of white. Wildcat Softball on Saturday is weather pending, so it’s too early for me to call it canceled.

You may also strike it rich while listening to Dave Leather play the blues at Comma Coffee, or tonight, during the first of many Jazz Jams that Sassafras will be home to. The Downtown Business Association’s Wine Walk, Artsy Fartsy’s Annual Jewelry Sale, Just Brew It’s Annual Thirsty Boy Home Brew Competition, and Family Fun Day at the Nevada State Museum are all hoping to lure you out of your home. Leave your ice skates at home though, the Arlington Square ice rink has closed for the season.

Wednesday, Feb. 4: Things to do in Carson City

Wonderful Wednesday is upon us, and one way to get over the hump is to head out for a good meal. If you haven’t heard yet, Sassafras has returned and is serving up its Eclectic fare in its new location right next to the Carson Hot Springs. Downtown, the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. will be hosting the Chamber of Commerce for its Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting. Capital Eats inside Westside Pour House (former home of Mo and Sluggo’s) always has some tempting dishes. A little further north on Carson St., Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro has live music this evening and a delicious array of options on its menu.

Sassafras re-opens at Hot Springs Road location

While many were looking at South Tahoe Wednesday night and a grand opening of the Hard Rock Casino, there was a Carson City opening noteworthy of its own with Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, re-locating to 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.

As many in Carson City know, the Sassafras in downtown was not only very popular among local foodies, artists and musicians but its following crossed other boundaries, too, from doctors, nurses, deputies and firefighters to old school conservative politicians and progressive lawmakers.

New tenants sought for downtown Carson City space that formerly housed Sassafras

The principal owners of the building that once housed Sassafras restaurant in downtown Carson City have asked a commercial real estate company to help them find a new restaurant to lease the space at 318 North Carson Street.

The realtor, Jack Brower, said Wednesday that he didn’t know anything about what happened to the tenant that was supposed to go in. He said he was recently asked by the building’s owners to find a new tenant.

Sassafras finds a new home at Carson Hot Springs Resort

The popular Sassafras restaurant, which was forced out of its downtown Carson City location earlier this year, will re-open soon at Carson Hot Springs Resort, according to the restaurant's owners.

What Works: Discovering opportunity in adversity

It was a typical Friday. I was between appointments at the corner of Goni and College Parkway when, out of nowhere, my vehicle lost power. There was no warning, no flickering lights, just “boom, boom, out go the lights” as the song goes.

Stuck in the turning lane, there was only one thing I could do, take action. I called my insurance company which offers free towing. While on hold with them, I texted and got my 5:30 p.m. appointment handled. Once I was assured the tow truck was on its way, I paused. Everything happened so fast.

Live music, great food and community support played out in full Saturday at Brewery Arts Center at the Save our Sassafras fundraiser.

Sassafrass fundraising festival on Saturday

Something amazing is happening in our Carson City! Once again our community is rising up to help a neighbor in need.

As many of you may have heard a favorite, downtown restaurant, Sassafras is being forced to relocate. The word spread throughout our community and one question was being asked “how can we help?”

I had a chance to attend a meeting of volunteers from the community to help organize a benefit to help Save our Sassafras. I then asked Owner, Scott Owen Doerr, what he wanted people to know. This is what he had to say:

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.
