Wednesday, March 11: Things to do in Carson City
The middle of the week, and if you’re like me, you are still adjusting to the time change. Get the blood pumping with some live music. Head to Sassafras for a Jazz Jam headed by Tom Miller, or maybe to Living the Good Life where Mick and Lynne will entertain you. Cowboy boots are not required if you want to get in on the country line dance lessons at Carson Lanes. If you’re a musician, the Carson City Symphony is looking for violinists and French horn players to join them at their rehearsals.
Commissioned 99 years ago today, the USS Nevada BB-36 was the US Navy’s first super-dreadnought, and she is a ship we can be proud of. She served in both World Wars, survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and was the only battleship present at both Pearl Harbor and the Normandy landings. When it was time to retire the Nevada, she was designated the target ship for atomic experiments at Bikini Atoll. They couldn’t sink her. A few months later she was used as a target during naval gunfire practice. Those ships couldn’t sink her. Finally the Nevadan was done in by an aerial torpedo, a precursor to the modern cruise missile, dropped from a bomber. Head over to the Nevada State Museum to see the exquisite silver service used on the ship.
