Carson City Rotary Brewfest to raise money for scholarships

The Carson City Rotary is moving its annual fundraiser outside this year for the Capital City Brewfest.

“We used to have the Pizza and Beer in the Carson Mall,” explained Katie Leao, co-chairwoman of the Brewfest committee. “We have literally outgrown that space.”

Project provides earthquake improvements to four Carson Valley bridges on Highway 395

Four bridges have been enhanced and improved for earthquake safety and stability along Highway 395 in the Carson Valley south of Carson City, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

NDOT begins project to extend Highway 50 Cave Rock tunnel at Lake Tahoe

The Nevada Department of Transportation has begun a project to enhance traveler safety and roadside water quality on U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area.

The project will extend the westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance. The new approximately 60-foot long and 27-foot tall structure will extend the existing tunnel to enhance safety by catching rock fall before it reaches the roadway.

Carson City Sheriff's Office gets baton in final leg of Law Enforcement Memorial Run

The Carson City Sheriff's Office was handed the baton this Wednesday afternoon in the final leg of the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run which began April 27 in Las Vegas.

Each leg of the run is completed in the memory of each officer listed on the state law enforcement memorial in Carson City. The final leg is dedicated in memory of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty August 15, 2015.

Howell will be honored at the 19th annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony Thursday, noon in Carson City.

CCSO Honor Guard Rifle Raffle to benefit Washington, D.C. memorial trip

A raffle is being held by Carson City Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard to send members to Washington D.C., for the National Law Enforcement Memorial. The item to be raffled is a River Rock Elite Comp rifle valued at $1,515.

Column: Reflections of a former foster parent

I recently wrote an article about child welfare needs in Carson City. This included the shortage of foster homes here in the Nevada state capital.

My wife, Lisa, and I were foster-to-adopt parents through the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for a few years. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the need for people to step up and open their hearts and homes to foster children is critical.

But making a commitment as heavy as this requires preparation on multiple levels.

Lineup for Brewery Arts Center's free summer concert series

The Brewery Arts Center (BAC) in downtown Carson City will be hosting a free summer concert series this year, sponsored by the Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation.

Through the efforts of the BAC, Carson City was one of 15 cities nationwide awarded the concert series for 2016.

The Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series kicks off June 4 and will run every Saturday evening through August 6 with live music starting at 7 p.m. along Minnesota Street next to the BAC. The 10-week music series will include one Friday night show on June 17.

The concert series is free and open to the public.

It’s getting to be that time of year again when dirt bike and ATV (all-terrain vehicle) riders head out to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. In doing so though, a reminder, riding your dirt bike or ATV on the streets is not legal as they are designated “Off road use only” vehicles.

Public Hearing on Thursday for Cave Rock extension project at Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Hearings Officer will hold a public hearing Thursday, March 31 for Nevada Department of Transportation’s proposed project to install a 60-foot-long tunnel extension and rock fall shelter on the north side of the westbound Cave Rock tunnel to better protect the traveling public.
