Carson City road report for March 21-27: Downtown plant salvaging Monday and Tuesday

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of March 21-27: Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street in the following locations:

— Monday, March 21, Third Street will be closed permanently to traffic.
— There will be closures for most of the week on E. Telegraph and W. Spear Streets.
— Ann and Sophia streets will be closed most of the week.
— N. Carson St. will remain one lane in each direction from Williams to 5th Street.
— Robinson St. will be closed starting on March 22 one block in each direction off of Carson St.

Days of closures subject to change due to weather issues.

Salvaged median plants will be available for pick up on Monday, March 21 after 5 p.m. through Tuesday, March 22. Plants will be available on a first come first serve basis at Third and Curry Street.

For details regarding traffic impacts as a result of the project, please refer to the material provided in local media outlets or go to carsonproud.com for more information. These sources will be updated weekly throughout the duration of the project.

On Monday, March 21, Arrowhead Drive and Hospitality Way will each be closed for a 15-minute period, just east of Carson Street, at some time between 9 a.m. and noon, due to utility work.

Lane closures are expected at the following locations due to utility work:
— Center Drive near Topsy Lane (Monday and Tuesday only).
— Curry Street between Telegraph and Spear Streets (shoulder work Tuesday night only).
— Presti Lane between Medical Parkway and Eagle Valley Ranch Road (shoulder work only).

There will be intermittent lane closures on the south shoulder of King Street near the intersection of Ormsby Boulevard. Minor delays are possible.

There will be periodic lane and ramp closures on southbound I-580 and the southbound Eastlake Boulevard merge lane due to the construction/extension of an auxiliary lane at this location. In addition, the Bellevue Road bridge over I-580 in Washoe Valley will continue to be closed due to maintenance. Detours will be signed.

Through early summer, periodic lane and ramp closures will continue on southbound I-580 and the Alternative U.S. 395/Eastlake Boulevard to southbound I-580 merge lane in the Duck Hill area. The existing merge lane will be extended 2,700 feet to reach Carson Street, providing additional space and safety to merge. Since auxiliary lane construction began, approximately 3,000 cubic yards of material has been excavated as part of construction. Detours are available by taking the Bellevue Road exit to southbound I-580.

The work is part of a project to repave the aging roadway surface, seismically retrofit bridges and make other improvements on Interstate 580 in Washoe Valley. NDOT last fall repaved approximately seven miles of interstate surface through Washoe Valley, with additional paving on remaining stretches of interstate to take place this spring.

The project will also seismically retrofit and enhance the I-580 Bellevue Road bridge and Eastlake Boulevard underpass as part of NDOT’s continuing effort to retrofit older bridges for enhanced safety and stability during potential earthquakes. The approximately $15 million project by Q & D Construction is scheduled to complete in the fall of 2016. Approximately 32,000 vehicles travel I-580 daily in the area.

Elsewhere, a weather system will move into the Sierra bringing wind and some snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds will increase on Sunday as the next weather system moves into northern California. Rain and snow will reach the northern Sierra late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon with snow levels near and above 8,000 feet.

Windy conditions continue into Monday, which will impact high profile vehicles traveling along Highway 395 and I-580. A second period of rain and snow will reach the Lake Tahoe and Sierra by Monday afternoon and Monday evening. Snow may accumulate on roads near and above 6,000 feet. This will slow commute times for those heaving over the passes, according to the weather service.

For road conditions call 1-800-427-7623 for California and 1-877-NV-Roads for Nevada. You can also check road conditions online for Nevada and California. If you have plans to travel through the Sierra be sure to check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
