CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College’s Community Education Department is now enrolling students for a variety of fall courses, including old favorites like Clay Club and brand new classes like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Community education classes are open to anyone in the Northern Nevada community and are designed to accommodate a variety of schedules and budgets.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. A 21-year-old woman was arrested early Thursday morning for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and other charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Carson High returning students are invited to the Senator Kick-off this morning to get their fill of back-to-school updates. Families will love the Movie in the Park; bring a blanket or chairs and come prepared to enjoy ‘Coco.’ Three days of high-flying fun begins today at Heritage Park in Gardnerville as the Splash Dogs competition gets underway. You will always find live music around town on Fridays, but during the Jazz and Beyond Festival, it seems like music is everywhere.

Story time this morning is for the little ones. Just about everyone is welcome to participate in their weekly Lego Club build. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival is in full swing, so you’ll find plenty of music around.

A 30 year-old man was arrested early Friday morning at 12:33 a.m. on multiple drug offenses, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said, including two counts of felony heroin possession, one count of felony methamphetamine possession, and gross misdemeanor possession of a dangerous prescription drug without a prescription.

Let’s get August off to a good start. The first Saturday of the month always plays host to the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, but with the Jazz and Beyond Musical Festival in full swing, you’ll have even more reasons to meander around downtown. The afternoon ice cream social at the historic Foreman-Roberts House is a perfect family-friendly treat before heading to the Brewery Arts Center for tonight’s free concert. The Washoe Zephyr is a double-sided coin. The breeze is a welcome reprieve from hot summer afternoons and can do wonders clearing the smoke from the valley. For the first time, the Board of County Commissioners of Lyon County, reportedly established in 1861, will start its day in Yerington, Nev. on Thursday, August 2 with Hindu invocation, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada offers a story book and craft activity on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; a family membership makes this a great place for summer fun. Spring rains caused more weeds to germinate in northern Nevada this year than in previous years, including some designated as “noxious weeds,” which the law requires to be eradicated.

It’s time for a new week, but unfortunately, the air conditions are just more of the same. The summer’s wildfire season just seems to be getting worse. As the smoky air settles in the valley, you’ll need to be much more cautious about your outdoor activity. Let Chili’s take care of dinner tonight, it’s too hot to cook anyway, and you’ll be helping the Northern Nevada Dream Center raise funds to assist those less fortunate. Kids can beat the heat at the Carson City Library with the Happy Notes program, just make sure you register first: space is limited.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

Ready for a good time? The Carson City Fair runs all day and culminates with a special concert in the arena starring Journey Unlimited. Car lovers are in for a treat: you can head down to the Carson Mall for their monthly cruise night, or roll into the Max Casino to get registered for the 33rd annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The Trippin King Snakes take the stage in McFadden Plaza for a free all-ages show. Break a leg to the kids of Youth Theater Carson City; they open their production of ‘Bye, Bye, Birdie’ at the Community Center this evening.

CARSON CITY — Financial aid and procrastination aren’t a good mix. With classes beginning at Western Nevada College in a month and a half, time is running out to take advantage of financial aid, including the Silver State Opportunity Grant.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

Carson City Symphony Association announces “Strings in the Summer,” a free 4-week program for string-instrument players of all ages, will begin on Thursday morning, July 26, 2018. Laura Gibson, Associate Concertmaster of Carson City Symphony, is the instructor. Registration and tuition are free, donations welcome.

There is more hot and smoky in store for the day, including a very real threat of thunderstorms. You may want to stick to indoor activities when the air quality is low like this. The Capital City Community Band has a free concert and ice cream social scheduled for this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome, and it’s hard to argue with ice cream on a day like this. If you are looking to start your own business, but still some legal guidance, you’ll find the ‘Lunch-n-Learn’ workshop at the Adams Hub extremely helpful.

Free training opportunities for the public will be offered this July in Silver Springs, Yerington, Fernley, and Dayton regarding how to reduce risks of accidental overdose using Naloxone treatment resources.

Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. The Brewery Arts Center free Concert Series continues tonight with Remember Jones on the stage; bring the family and your friends for a good time had by all. Read on for even more hot summer fun.

Summer heat is in full effect and with thunderstorms threatening the Sierra, wildfires are even more likely. Luckily, you’ll find some ways to entertain the kids without having to head outdoors. Head down for family story time at the Carson City Library with the young ones; older kids will want to check out the weekly Lego Club this afternoon. The Rally Route 50 West automotive scavenger hunt and race comes to an end this evening in McFadden Plaza with an announcement of the winners. Summertime Cruise Nights continue with this week’s meet-up at Johnny Rockets.

What a day. The Concert Under the Stars brings Jefferson Starship to the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Show. Get there early to peruse the silent auction items and food vendors; the annual fundraising benefit for the Greenhouse Project is always the talk of the town. The Greatest Showman on Earth makes an appearance at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch: it’s Chautauqua night, and Doug Mishler will be portraying “Circus Showman P. T. Barnum.” The Stewart Indian School in east Carson City has history reaching into the early days of our state.

A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for suspicion of felony embezzlement after allegedly stealing cash and product from a marijuana collective while he was an employee, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Tuesdays are happening in Carson City. Tonight, the Mile High Jazz Band takes to the stage at Living the Good Life for their monthly performance. Take advantage of the new program at the Nevada State Library and Archives: once a month, you’re welcome to bring a lunch and listen to a presentation. Celebrate the newest exhibit in the OXS Gallery inside the Nevada Arts Council.

Last week was a little nutty with a holiday smack-dab in the middle. Now it’s back to the grind. Get the kids out of the house for some fun at the Carson City Library. A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday for suspicion of felony battery with a deadly weapon and alleged gross misdemeanor luring children, a sheriff's deputy said.
