Employee admits to stealing cash, product from Carson City marijuana collective
A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for suspicion of felony embezzlement after allegedly stealing cash and product from a marijuana collective while he was an employee, a sheriff’s deputy said.
Jeremy Grant Thompson was arrested at 1:18 p.m. in the 2600 block of Highway 50 East. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the Sierra Wellness Collective and learned Thompson was at the location and was being terminated. Sierra Wellness wanted to report cash and products that were taken during his employment.
The deputy arrived and met with the CEO, director of human resources and the suspect, Thompson. The deputy was advised Thompson had been caught on security cameras removing money from the cash register and putting it into his pants pocket numerous times during his employment, which began April 17, 2018. Sierra Wellness wanted the employee arrested.
The deputy spoke with the human resource manager who said that he had multiple incidents captured on security cameras that showed Thompson skimming money from the cash registers and short changing customers on products they purchased.
The HR director stated this was a recurring issue with Thompson and said he was alerted to the thefts based on information from an incident July 5. That’s when a customer made a complaint regarding the amount of products purchased, the arrest report states.
The customer said six products were purchased and he had only received five products. The HR director said the videotape shows Thompson place five items into a bag when the sale indicated six items were sold. He then placed the money into a cash drawer in the correct spots of the register, the arrest report states.
The purchase was for a total of $335. Later, Thompson allegedly cancelled the transaction and took the $335 out of the drawer and placed the $335 into his pockets, the arrest report states.
The HR director said that due to the amount of data in the security footage he would have to download the information to a flash drive, which was provided by the deputy.
The arrest report states the deputy turned to Thompson and asked him if he knew why he was at the business. Thompson replied “because I have been stealing from the store since I was hired,” the arrest report states.
The suspect was asked if he wanted to complete a voluntary written statement of the incident. Thompson replied he did and he was given a statement form.
He provided the following written statement:
“I fully admit to taking cash and product from my employers Sierra Wellness Connection on multiple occasions, throughout my employment. I can’t express how incredibly sorry I am for what I have done. If I had to guess the amount, it is hard to know how much, but I would say over $1,000 but under $2,000 total.”
Sierra Wellness agreed to complete a citizen’s arrest form. Thompson was taken into custody for suspicion of felony embezzlement. Bail: $20,000.
