Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

It is time to gather up the family and gear and head to your favorite recreation spot. Memorial Day weekend is the kick off for the summer, and traditionally it is a very busy weekend on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Forest visitors can enjoy biking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and many more recreations activities this summer.

Don’t let the weather fool you. Once we get past the gloomy skies of today, we’re on track for a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. The inaugural Rockin’ Rib Fest at Fandango begins this afternoon and runs until Monday, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to sample some grilled bbq. The Proscenium Players begin their run of ‘The Hit’ in the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater; break a leg. Lend a hand to our various Veterans’ organizations this afternoon as they plant flags on the graves of those who served in the Lone Mountain Cemetery: many hands make light work.

Beginning Friday, Memorial Day weekend in Carson City will feature the community’s first Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango. The four day inaugural event will bring award-winning rib cookers from around the country to the capital city, including Austin’s Texas Lightning BBQ, Chicago BBQ Company, Back Forty Texas BBQ, and local favorite Carson City BBQ.

UPDATE 3:51PM: Progress was made cleaning up the massive debris flows caused by a mudslide Monday across Highway 395. With help from the Nevada Department of Transportation Highway 395 is now open. The Douglas County Road Department, Town of Minden and the Town of Gardnerville made progress on Topaz Park Road and it remains open.

This coming Memorial Day Weekend, the Carson Nugget presents to you, Majestic: San Francisco's Ultimate Tribute to Journey (formerly Evolution).

The concert will be held in the Grand Ballroom inside the Carson Nugget Casino and Hotel.

Honor Flight Nevada is holding our 6th annual Charity Golf fundraiser hosted at The Club at Arrow Creek in Reno on Sunday, May 27, 2018. Casino Fandango plans to heat up Memorial Day weekend in Carson City with the community’s first Rockin’ Rib Fest, May 25 through May 28. The inaugural event marks the only Memorial Day rib fest in the region and will be the largest planned Memorial Day celebration in the community, organizers say.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is back to full operations just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend and the busy summer season. Construction crews this week completed removal of more than 110,000 square feet of debris and repairs to the tracks on the museum grounds that were damaged by flooding in January.

The Carson Nugget turns up the electricity for Memorial Day weekend, announcing the first concert in their 2017 Summer Concert Series, Volt: A Salute to AC/DC.

Powering up Sunday, May 28, VOLT: A Salute to AC/DC is a hard-hitting, high energy rock band based out of Livermore, Calif, specializing in the music of AC/DC and performances of the albums Back in Black and Powerage, Live.

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is teaming up with local law enforcement agencies to educate motorists on seatbelt usage. The "Click it or Ticket" campaign runs now through May 31.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad begins its ninth season as a major visitor attraction and local’s favorite Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-28, with round trip steam trains plying the 16-mile route between Carson City and Virginia City.
