Memorial Day weekend Services, Celebrations, and Events
While many think of Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial kick-off to summer, its true purpose is to remember those who we’ve lost in defense of our country. Here are a few ways to honor our heroes over the next few days:
Lone Mountain Cemetery is the final resting place for several Nevada veterans. At 4:00 p.m. Friday, the public is invited to help Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 place American flags on the graves of servicemen. For more information, you can contact Ron Gutzman at 775-882-6528. The flags will be removed Monday at 4:00 p.m. Volunteers and service groups are always appreciated.
While not military service related, the Nevada State Railroad Museum will have the historic Glenbrook Engine under steam this weekend. Additionally, Steam Engine #25 will be rearing to go for rides along the refurbished track. Warren Engine Co. #1 will be on site selling refreshments and the Museum resumes its summer hours: open from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Thursdays – Mondays. Flooding earlier this year caused substantial damage to the track, shop, annex and main museum building. Thanks to the very hard work of museum volunteers, state and federal agencies, and construction crews, the annual Memorial Day Steam celebration will go on as usual.
Everybody loves a parade, especially Virginia City. Saturday at 12:00 p.m. floats, walkers, veterans, car clubs, and a mix of everyone else will take to ‘C’ Street for their annual Celebration of Heroes Memorial Day Parade. While they prefer early registration, if you get to the Fourth Ward School at 10:30 a.m. there’s a chance to join in.
Monday, at 10:00 a.m., a Memorial Day Ceremony for the Native American Indian community’s Veterans will be held at the Historic Stewart Indian School Cemetery: located off Snyder Avenue, behind Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and across from the Stewart Indian School complex. The ceremony will last approximately 45 minutes.
A Memorial Day Service at Eastside Memorial Park at 1600 Buckeye Road in Minden begins at 11:00 a.m. Monday with welcome remarks, opening prayer, flag-raising, wreath laying and taps played by students from Douglas High School. A picnic in the park with free food and drinks will run from 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Bring a chair and blanket to enjoy your picnic.
The annual Carson City Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at in the Veterans section of the Lone Mountain Cemetery. Join local dignitaries at we honor those who have served our country.
The Storey County Veterans Tribute Dedication Ceremony takes place Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mark Twain Community Center at 500 Sam Clemens Ave in Dayton. The public is invited to attend the service and a bar-be-que to follow.
Active military will enjoy a free day in the Carson Hot Springs outdoor pools all day on Monday. They are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. and located at 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.
Evergreen Gene’s Shop at 1811 N. Carson St. invites you to their annual Memorial Day Bar-be-que. From 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. free hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks await all visitors. You’ll be entertained by some members of the upcoming Senior Follies show and service members will enjoy discounts in the store.
Friday through Monday, Empire Ranch Golf Course is offering a free round of golf with cart to all those with active military identification. Wear something red, white, AND blue for a free domestic draft beer in Millard’s Restaurant. Call 775-885-2100 to set up a tee time.
Through May 31, all of the restaurants and shops of the Carson Mall will be giving away free American flags.
